Today we’d like to introduce you to Alejandro Martínez-Peña.
Alejandro, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My beginnings in the world of Art go back to my youth before I even thought about starting my Architecture career, the attraction to the art that my parents collected for years was my motivation to discover from an early age the need to recreate them with elements and techniques originated by my own vision.
My postgraduate studies in Italy and the opportunity to visit the most important museums and galleries throughout Europe motivated me to start my pictorial activity in 1994, participating in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Mexico, USA, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Italy, Thailand, Korea, Poland, Singapore, and China.
I started my artistic career as a figurative painter attracted by that form of expression in its narrative qualities, but my work is in a constant evolutionary state becoming an abundant open field of exploration within abstract expressionism, using mixed techniques and an unlimited use of color where I apply organic elements that support the theme that I use.
While the changes in my work are developed, my latent commitment as an artist has never wavered, I will continue to be motivated by the professional duty of knowing and expressing current social and environmental concerns through my artistic practice.
If a fraction of this audience is able to experience a positive change in their consciousness when observing my work, all my effort and intention in the artistic process are justified for me.
Has it been a smooth road?
Migrating from Monterrey Mexico my hometown 34 years ago to the city of Tijuana, a new region for me, so rich and diverse called the door of Mexico or of all Latin America, I had the opportunity to start my professional career in the art world without prior preparation in the Visual Arts, a great obstacle without a doubt was the criticism of the local artistic guild of the time, but all this made it my main challenge, preparing myself and managing to evolve in my ability and creative capacity throughout more than 25 years.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
My business has been related to the Visual Arts for the last 25 years, I have done individual and group exhibitions, locally and internationally, presenting installation art, various techniques of engraving, object art and mainly painting on canvas, paper and wood using mostly mixed media.
My career during all these years has had an important evolutionary process that allowed me to remain in the taste of a large number of collectors and followers of my work, I am very proud that this is also very well appreciated internationally by different countries in which I have participated around the world.
The handling of color, movement, and energy of the elements that I use in my compositions have distinguished me for capturing the attention of people of all ages, achieving a very personal empathy with the viewers.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
What I do like best about San Diego is the proximity to Mexico, where we have the largest border crossing in the world, and through art, a bond is created that uses the contrast of our two great cultures.
What I like the least, is the little interest that exists for the acquisition of original works of art unlike other cities of the American Union and the lack of support for artists and art promoters from both sides of the border.
