Formed in San Diego, CA in 2012, Aliro Marketing was created to provide a more affordable and customer service oriented alternative for businesses who want to increase brand awareness and engagement with Social Media Marketing Management, allowing the business owners to Find Their Freedom Again. The owner, Alicia Shapiro, has had personal success prior to forming her company as a retail store manager trying to increase her own sales and keep her store alive. She took on a store slated to be closed, and in just six months the store was number one in the region! She achieved this success by figuring out who the target customer was and finding various marketing techniques to deliver her product that was appealing to her target market.
Alicia has lived in America’s Finest City, specifically the Ocean Beach area, since 2005, and loves the small town feel while being close to downtown San Diego and the pulse of the city. While living and working in Ocean Beach, Alicia found that many small businesses either didn’t know how to use social media for business or simply didn’t have time to do their own social media marketing. Her love for the small businesses in the area developed into a passion to see them succeed by creating bigger brand awareness through social media.
Combining the knowledge and real-life experience, Alicia knew she could help the small business owners succeed by taking on the challenge of creating bigger brand awareness to increase their social media presence, simply by managing their day-to-day social media activities for them; this frees up the small business owner’s time to do what they do best which is running their own company.
In her free time, Alicia enjoys playing her flute, hiking, and has even had a brief stint in stand-up comedy! She is also a huge fan of the AHL Hockey team, San Diego Gulls and enjoys attending home games.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Starting out, the biggest challenge for me was name recognition and finding clients, as I’m sure is a huge challenge for any new business. I started by going to the businesses I knew and frequented – a few of them gave me a chance, and then they began recommending me to other small business owners they knew. I went to several networking events and joined a few networking groups; I’ve always found new clients either through the networking events or by client referrals. It didn’t happen overnight, and frankly, was a little scary financially at first, but overall, I’ve been pretty lucky.
Currently, my business is in the middle of some growing pains where I don’t quite have extra cash flow yet to hire an employee, but I need to hire someone to help so I can take the company to the next level; as they say, it’s a good problem to have! I know this will come in time, I just have to be patient, which isn’t my strongest quality – ha!
As with all consulting companies who are growing, there are cycles of ups and downs, but you trust in your abilities and know you’re implementing best practices that will get you through the down times. I feel fortunate to have a good business sense and I trust my gut instincts to help me make decisions.

Aliro Marketing is a social media management agency. My husband is by far my greatest champion and supporter – he seemed to have blind faith in what I wanted to do when starting my company. He always supported me and gave me the strength to start Aliro Marketing. I appreciate his belief & confidence in me because without his support, I wouldn’t have been able to start my company or keep it running. I guess you can say he believed in what I was doing so much he wanted a piece of it – he quit his job a few years ago, and became a co-owner in the business! Before I started my company, I worked at a bank.
My branch manager, Andres Melgar, was a fantastic cheerleader and mentor who provided some valuable business insights I couldn’t have received in a classroom. He listened, provided advice, and inspired the confidence I needed – I’ll always appreciate the role he played in my life. Another great cheerleader of mine before I started my company was a sweet woman who was a client of mine at the bank. Her name was Tami and she gave me a lapel pin that said “courage”. She told me to always look at it when I needed some extra courage because she said she saw that I had the ability to go far in life and knew my company would be successful; she had her own business and knew there could be some scary times and she always wanted me to know I could get through anything with a little courage.
I still have that pin. I am also fortunate to have a few clients who are also my greatest supporters; they are constantly referring me and my social media services to people. These wonderful clients are also women owned businesses and they’ve brought me several new clients over the years. They are Holly Kennedy from Kennedy Golf, Michelle Menzel from Charity Compliance Solutions, Renee Zau from DonationMatch, and Momo Jackson from World Curry Restaurant.
