Meet Angel “AROCK” Castillo of BPM Supreme in Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angel “AROCK” Castillo.

AROCK, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Getting into DJing came pretty naturally for me. I started around the age of 12 and was fortunate to have a very supportive family. My father got me some of the best DJ gear that was available at that time. Around 1999, I joined a local record pool in San Diego. At this time, a record pool was essentially a club where you would pay per month for a stack of vinyl records. I was learning a lot and quickly began to make friends with the older, more established DJs in the city.

Over the years, I continued to DJ and also found opportunities to work in radio through the connections I was making as a DJ. I always had a passion for making creative mixes and looked ahead to the newest trends in music – one of those new trends being digital DJ software for mixing and producing music.

In 2008, digital DJing had started to gain more and more popularity. I realized there was a need in the industry for digital format-focused record pools. With help from two employees, we distributed monthly music and mixes on CDs. As momentum around the pool continued to pick up, I gained valuable business partners that would help us go from CD distribution to a fully functioning digital platform.

The process wasn’t easy and the technology was still very expensive at this time. It probably took about 2 years to be completely finished, but once it was ready, I started to push it to our existing members. Once word got out about our subscription service, it started to just explode. We were creating memberships for DJs across the country. We’ve been consistently growing year after year.

Now with over 20 in-house employees and a growing number of brand ambassadors around the world, BPM Supreme has partnered with some of the biggest record labels, gear manufacturers, software companies, artists, and producers worldwide.

We’ve even now created a design agency based on our success in this community. BPM Media Group creates anything and everything graphically for DJs and artists. Our goal is to be the number one trusted source for providing essential tools to the DJ community.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
BPM Supreme is a digital music subscription service that caters to DJs. As you can imagine, with the rate at which technology has advanced over the last 10-20 years, the road getting here was pretty eventful. In the very beginning, I did face a lot of challenges, but there was never a moment when I thought I didn’t have the tools and resources to overcome them. I’ve always had the motivation to keep going and a vision for what BPM Supreme could be.

Even today, if we face a new challenge in the business, I’m confident that the team we’ve assembled will find the best solution and do great work. I know there’s nothing we can’t take on.

BPM Supreme – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
What sets BPM Supreme apart from other companies is our ability to connect directly with our audience. We listen to the community and use that feedback to improve our business and our digital platform. Whether through social media or our expanding artist relations program, we are always in touch with the DJ community.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
There have been a lot of milestones over the years for BPM Supreme, but I have to say that some of the best moments have been over just the last 2 or 3 years. I’m really proud of the new partnerships and relationships we’ve built recently with large, industry-leading companies. From huge manufacturers like Roland to big retail partners like IDJNOW, our alliance with these companies has helped us grow and become a trusted go-to source for the DJ community.
