Today we’d like to introduce you to Angelia Trinidad.
Angelia, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
When I graduated college with a BA with a minor in Arts Education, I found myself feeling unsure of my next steps, lacking direction and structure. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with my life. I knew I wanted to help people but I wasn’t quite sure how. I had gone to school thinking I was going to come out wanting to be an educator but I realized that wasn’t really my calling. I wanted to start my own business so I thought about the tools that had helped me in life and one of the main things was my planner. The problem was, it wasn’t solving all my problems. I had to carry around a notebook for journaling, a sketch pad for doodling, my planner for my schedule. The issue is that it wasn’t all in one place. I decided I’d create the planner that I needed that didn’t exist yet.
I put my project on Kickstarter and raised $48,000, in 30 days through organic growth and word of mouth, messaging my friends on Facebook and asking them to share it. This first Kickstarter really solidified that I wasn’t the only one who wanted a planner that was the one place for all my thoughts. The next year I did another Kickstarter campaign that went viral and raised about $660,000 through on Kickstarter and over a million dollars on my website. Literally, over a month, I had become a millionaire, and the needs of the company changed so drastically that I moved out of my parents’ garage, got a warehouse, hired 40 of my friends to help in the warehouse and customer service and really dove into managing a team.
Now, five years later, Passion Planner is a force in the planner industry composed of 30 team members. I’ve come far from the days when I felt directionless. Now, every day is filled with trying to create the best product to help people live more intentionally and manifest their ideal lives.
Has it been a smooth road?
Looking back, I feel very fortunate with my entrepreneurial journey, but I must admit when it rains it pours. We have grown with each storm, stronger and better, but it was a rollercoaster. Personally, mentally, physically, emotionally, I have been challenged. Our company has grown so exponentially that we’ve been in an ever-changing environment, reevaluating, taking action, and evolving as we go.
There have been a lot of different growing pains. One of the most difficult struggles we went through publicly was when our Kickstarter went viral, and the port strikes were happening at the same time. For two months, planners that people had donated money to receive were sitting on a ship off the coast of California and there was nothing that we could do about it. To try to solve the problem, we decided to reorder the planners and shipped them via plane. The whole process cost the company well over $300,000. Looking back, it was the best thing we could have done. It was and still is our priority to keep our customers happy, create a tool for systemic change, and make our creations accessible to as many people as possible. We’re very lucky that a lot of our customers have stayed loyal to us over all these past years, even after that snafu.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Passion Planner story. Tell us more about it.
Passion Planner creates tools and content to help people live life more intentionally, by reinventing how people plan their lives. We are known for our product Passion Planner that is your paper life coach. It helps you break down your long and short term goals, turn those goals into actionable steps, and create a plan of action to achieve those goals.
As a company, we are most proud of our Get One Give One program, which allows us to give one planner to a person in need for every planner we sell. It’s our way of giving back. To me, being successful isn’t about growing a multimillion dollar company, it’s about helping millions of people by providing the tools needed to live their best lives.
Anyone could create a similar planner with the same features as Passion Planner, but what sets us apart is the community we’ve cultivated. Our #PashFam is a culmination of like-minded individuals all passionate about living life intentionally. From the people who work for the company to the people who buy the product, each and every one of them lives our mission. They work towards their goals every single day.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I think more and more people will start to remember and realize the value of writing on paper and doing things the old-fashioned way. There is a special power to writing out your goals and having a physical copy to look to every day. I think in this digital age there will be a powerful merging of the two; analog and digital. I think we will see more apps develop around journaling and planning, but I truly believe that there will always be power in writing down your life aspirations on a piece of paper that you can keep forever.
