Meet Audrey Sarquilla of White Peacock Yoga in Encinitas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Audrey Sarquilla.

Audrey is an incurable optimist. Her goal in life is to inspire others to share their unique talents and gifts so that they live a life filled with passion and purpose. As the founder of White Peacock Yoga School and Studio, she shares the teachings of traditional yoga practices in a relevant, modern way.

With over 20 years of teaching body movement, from a hospital setting rehabilitating injuries to outdoor yoga in the park, Audrey is passionate about inspiring the “a-ha’s” of the body, mind, and spirit. Through White Peacock Yoga School Audrey leads certification programs globally and locally for aspiring yoga teachers.

While their studio makes its home in Encinitas, CA, they recognize and embrace their connection to the global yoga community. White Peacock Yoga School was birthed and Accredited by the Yoga Alliance in August 2013, and they moved into their El Camino Real studio in January 2014. They’re proud members of the neighborhood’s independently owned, socially conscious businesses. They love Encinitas!

Besides running a yoga studio, leading yoga teacher training and retreats, Audrey empowers women to grow and transform their personal lives and professional practices by harmonizing the heart + mind. Her approach to coaching and transformation is one of a Multi-dimensional being balancing wealth, health and spirituality.

Audrey’s education in business school, pre-med, yoga, massage, hypnotherapy, behavioral and physical sciences, life coaching, nutrition, herbs and other bodywork modalities provide her clients and students a holistic, thoughtful means to heal and thrive!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Ha! No… I would say quite bumpy! Having a small business, especially a brick and mortar space, is super challenging. First struggle as an owner is working a lot. ALL the time!

My first year it was tough keeping track of which day it was since I was working 7 days a week. Creating something from scratch is a huge labor of love. And I still love it! We have as many yoga studios in Encinitas as coffee shops. So, I would say staying true to my offering is the challenge and not allowing fear to dictate how I operate.

Also, being a mom N pop biz, we need to educate our community a bit more on our offerings and stay agile to easily shift direction. After 3 years, we have the most compassionate, dedicated members and it is a pleasure to witness the support and love that is shared within our walls!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the White Peacock Yoga story. Tell us more about the business.
My business, White Peacock Yoga, is a boutique yoga studio (non-heated: very unique in San Diego!) and school. We share a multi-lineage approach, based in Hatha, Bhakti, Tantra + Ashtanga yoga, and specialize in creating a safe environment to deeply connect with yourself, and grow your own yoga practice.

Yoga is a practice to inquire about your behavior, habitual patterns, and the purpose your create in your life. This sets the stage for you to FEEL all the feels so you can shift the way you relate to yourself and others. This is not easy by any means. Yet, Yoga works. It’s healed my stinkin’ thinkin’ time and time again. It’s changed all of my relationships and it’s made me a kinder more compassionate person.

I’m most proud of my Yoga School Graduates that teach at my studio. They teach me so much about what yoga truly has to offer and they are paying it forward. I bow in deep gratitude to them!

One of the things that set up apart from other yoga studios is that we “OM” and we are proud of it! We share Sanskrit terminology in a fun way and educate any student with an open and curious heart. We also share a unique class filled with Sanskrit mantras and live music called “Bhakti Brunch Flow”, Nourish your heart every Sunday at 10:30 am. The White Peacock Band includes; Audrey Sarquilla on Harmonium + Vocals, Chris Sarquilla on Handpan + Guitar, Terri Egan on Bass + Drums and Jess O’Reilly on Violin.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I’m not sure I resonate with the word “luck” yet synchronicity plays a HUGE role in my business. One of the boosts I credit to opening my yoga studio was advice from Sir, Richard Branson. I was invited to his island by a dear friend in 2014 and had the opportunity to get to know Richard (a bit) and teach him yoga.

In one of the many conversations I had with him, I asked him how he deals with self-doubt and the fear of failure? He told me, Audrey you are so passionate about what you do, anyone can see that. You simply don’t have time to doubt or have fear. You can read more here…

I was negotiating my lease on my yoga studio space while I was there and signed the deal shortly after coming home… It was a pivotal moment for the business for sure!
