Today we’d like to introduce you to Shadi Farsi.
Shadi, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Bright Mothers was created during my time at CSUSM. I was a single parent going to school full time earning my BSBA. After giving birth to my son Leo in 2014, I made the decision to go back to school to earn a degree that would allow me to be a better role model for my son and supply me with the tools I needed to achieve my career goals. During my educational journey, I thrived as a student and enjoyed being back in a learning environment after not being in school for six years. Because of my experiences being a single mother student and seeing other mothers like me, many lacking the support, both financial and otherwise, that I was blessed to have, I wanted to do something to help mothers continue and complete their education to provide a brighter and better future for their family.
Has it been a smooth road?
I started Bright Mothers my final year of college, and as you can imagine starting a nonprofit at this time while also being a single parent was difficult. I spent many late nights studying, working on projects and also trying to balance mom life. However, I believe that my struggles are what brings me to my best self. Working hard and creating something that helps others fuels my heart and soul which allows me to keep going. Personally, the most important thing for me is to enjoy the struggles and successes the same since without the struggles I wouldn’t be where I am today.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Bright Mothers – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Bright Mothers was founded to help single mother students pursuing higher education. Bright Mothers helps fund scholarships for low-income single mother students throughout southern California. I believe it is so important to support and empower other women and this is what Bright Mothers does. As far as accomplishments that we are proud of go, in its first year as a non-profit, Bright Mothers has funded 11 scholarships at nine colleges, held numerous fundraisers, and empowered countless women to pursue their educational dreams.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love that the city of San Diego provides so many opportunities for people of all walks of life to pursue their dreams. Between the colleges, businesses, restaurants, and stadiums, there is no shortage of options for people to try new things. As with most of Southern California, I would say my least favorite thing is the traffic, but I guess that just comes with having so many people around!
