Meet David and Holly Hepburn of Hepburn Creative

Today we’d like to introduce you to David and Holly Hepburn.

David and Holly, please share your story with us. 
Hepburn Creative first opened its doors as a video production company in 2008 in San Diego. From the beginning, it has always been our mission to provide high quality, engaging videos. Each video brings its own challenges, so the crew grows and scales as needed, but our executive team remains the same: Holly and I. Yeah, you heard that right. A married couple that works together full time. Aren’t you always at each others’ throats?! Believe it when we tell you, we love every moment of it.

David: “With a last name like Hepburn, it would seem like destiny to be a part of the film and video industry. While the jury’s still out on any actual relation to Kathryn or Audrey, I can tell you that I discovered the joy of video production in high school.

Looking back, the production value is… less than stellar. But it got me hooked! It was in high school that I first had the idea to someday start a video business and partner with businesses and non-profits around the world.

Feeling that my course was set, I attended Azusa Pacific University in Southern California (where I met Holly) and graduated with a degree in Cinema & Broadcast Arts. As a “film major,” I knew two things: I didn’t want to be the next director in Hollywood (like many of my classmates), and I didn’t want to work at a church. I just wanted to start my business. (Spoiler Alert: This is a lesson in what happens when you say you don’t want to do something.)

Summers at home for me during my college years ended up including work as a production assistant on a number of Hawaii-based television shows, and when I graduated in 2006, I moved home and become a Production Assistant on a little show called LOST. A few months later, I received a call from one of my college mentors who was now working at a growing multi-campus church in San Diego, asking if I’d like to come work on his creative team.

I moved to San Diego, and for the next 7 years, I worked on the video creative team of one of the fastest growing churches in the United States, finishing my last two years as Director of Video. I still knew that starting my (now our) own company was the ultimate goal, and used my nights and weekends to establish our video company on the side.

In 2008, our company was born, serving corporate clients in San Diego.”

Holly: “If you’d asked me when I was a kid what my career would be, I think that being a cinematographer/editor would have been close to the bottom of my list. Not because I didn’t want to do it, but because it wasn’t even on my radar of possibilities.

I grew up knowing that I wanted to pursue a career that would help people, and I graduated with my bachelors in social work, ready to change the world. I spent several years growing and gaining experience in the non-profit sector, including co-founding a non-profit in San Diego called GenerateHope. I also started growing and learning as a cinematographer, helping David on shoots. I quickly discovered how much I love getting to be creative and that helping people can happen through video, not just at a non-profit. My eyes were opened to the possibility of changing lives through telling stories.”

10 years after being established, and 20 years since David first had the idea, today Hepburn Creative is a woman-owned video production company based in San Diego, and the clients we serve are global. We have the privilege to partner with national brands, local small businesses, and our favorite… international non-profit organizations changing lives abroad. Every new project we take on benefits from the incredible diversity of work that has come before it.

We love what we do. We love the stories we get to tell. We love partnering with clients that are impacting the world.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Being a husband and wife small business team definitely has its challenges, but not necessarily the ones you might think. Like we said, we love working together and are a really great team.

Owning a small business is like being on a boat, and that boat often encounters high seas. Our biggest challenge is being together in that boat, sinking or succeeding without benefits like a guaranteed income or healthcare plan from a spouse’s employer. While this frequently can bring stress and challenges into our lives, we find that the hard times make the great times even more fulfilling.

Hepburn Creative – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are San Diego’s video production company that sparks impact, crafting videos that engage and ignite action. We’re not like other companies.

Our videos are impactful. Each video we create engages and ignites a response. Whether that next step is purchasing your product, booking your services, or making a donation to your cause, each video we craft is designed to inspire the viewer to take action.

We’re agile. Great ideas don’t accomplish anything if they only live in your head. We are logistics aficionados. We love ramping up new projects quickly. From local production here in San Diego to on-location shoots in Haiti and beyond, we know time is of the essence in any business, and you aren’t interested in waiting any longer than you absolutely must. Our response times are lightning quick, and we’re committed to blowing expectations out of the water.

We’re wholehearted. Each video is more than work to us. As brand loyal customers ourselves, we are passionate about partnering with incredible brands, companies and organizations to spread the word. It may seem trite to say we treat our clients like family, but we’re serious about going the distance to make sure your video accomplishes your goals.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Our greatest success comes from helping others. Whether that’s a business achieving their sales goals and reaching new customers with video, a non-profit sponsoring more kids and impacting new communities, or being the megaphone for a small business to share what makes them great, it’s all about impact.

David often feels like we’re one of the least successful small businesses because if you measure success financially, oof. Our metric is impact. When we’re a part of a project that’s changing the world, we know we’re doing something right.

  • Our projects vary wildly and we tailor our services to each client. Most projects begin in the $5,000-$10,000 range.

    I met David as he was about to graduate from college. We’ve stayed in touch. The passion he has for having impact in the world through media was as evident then as now. Time is the ultimate test of passion. Hepburn Creative passes the test.

    Thanks for the update of what you are doing. Kinda beyond my comprehension but can tell you love it. May God continue to bless you and move forward with Him. Thnaks for th video for our 50th. It was really enjoyed. We had 128 people come. Then on to Alaska and now home completerly exhausted but had a wonderful time. Love
