Meet David Toma and John King of Phantom Bikes in Miramar

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Toma and John King.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
John: The motor bicycles are an upscale lifestyle brand created by John Allen King, who is a longtime resident of Southern California and lives in Rancho Santa Fe/Del Mar area of San Diego. John talks about his idea…. “My father created a huge, and to this day, a very successful electronics company, and as I grew up my father was always tinkering with new gadgets and I guess it rubbed off on me. I love building product ideas, so I started taking a beach cruiser bicycle and mounting an engine in it. After searching the internet to find things that I would need. After looking at everything online I simply felt that I could build something better – that was the Yahoo moment I suppose and said, “I can build a better bike.”

Asking a friend to help me with this project we started building these bikes out of a 10×10 storage shed on a piece of property that I own in Del Mar, California. After we had completed two bicycles for ourselves and ran them around town, the word got out that we had built these motorized bicycles and one bike became two, and two became ten – that was seven years ago. Today, our facility is 5000 sq. ft. with a loft, David Toma who is our VP of Business Development, pushed us into the electric bike market, and what a great decision that was. The Phantom electric bikes we build are fantastic! We are working on a branded bike for one of the world’s largest car companies and we have a co-branding agreement with Von Dutch – we are growing, the sales continue to increase each year, and we are continuing to design new and improved motorized electric bicycles.

David: David is the Vice President Business Development (Marketing, Sales and Distribution). David is an accomplished motion picture and TV production executive with many years experience bringing a wide variety of product to market.

Has it been a smooth road?
The company is self-financed – the struggle is to continue to innovate, stay ahead of the curve, and drive business with limited resources.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Phantom Bikes – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
David: I am the VP of Business development – John King is the designer and owner.

I specialize in business affairs, sales, marketing and distribution – I set policy for business transactions – John is the designer – we make a good team – design and our customer service sets us apart from other companies – we are here to help the consumer – regardless if you buy from us or someone else we are here to help. Phantom Bikes is dedicated to design and innovation that provides the bicycle consumer with a combination of the best customer service, comfort, quality and economy available in bicycle transportation.

In a world of mass-produced inexpensive knock off’s, Phantom Bikes sets itself apart from that crowd by building a quality bike with a distinctive retro look at an effective price. The bikes are strong, durable and built with style and comfort of ride in mind.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I like the beauty of our city. The access to the outdoors – ocean/beach and close to mountains and deserts. the least thing liked is the high cost of housing for our fellow citizens/neighbors in the area – and we notice that drivers are much too eager to speed on the roads – as a bicycle company we want to advocate for safer roadways.

Pricing:

  • Phantom Vision – retail $2,800
  • Phantom ‘R’ Cafe Racer – retail $3,200
  • Swirl Step Thru bike with front basket and rear rack – retail $1,495
