Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Caroline Bui.
Dr. Bui, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My story is quite simple. Through 20+ years of playing soccer, I’ve broken my arm, rolled my ankles over two dozen times, fractured my femur, had two knee operations (ACL and meniscus), and acquired a few concussions along the way. Being in and out of recovery and seeing the process over and over again, I decided to hang up the cleats to finally be on the other side of sports. I wanted to be the one taking care of the athletes. I became a student athletic trainer for my high school, and eventually majored in Athletic Training as an undergraduate student. I finished there but always had a curiosity to go further and that is when I decided that I wanted to get into Chiropractic school. This is where my whole life changed. After my doctorate degree, I did my postgrad studies to acquire my CCSP (Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician) and I am currently finishing up my DACBSP (Diplomate of American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physician).
Today, I have a practice in Kearny Mesa, San Diego…and a second one opening October 2017 in Downtown San Diego. I have worked with many types of athletes ranging from weekend warriors all the way to professional and Olympic athletes. I love being able to travel to different places to be a sideline doctor at sporting events of all kinds. It isn’t always about being confined into an office space if you’re a doctor. Being a sports doc has been beyond an amazing experience. It has been a long journey of tears, sweat, hardships, and challenges…but I wouldn’t want to change a single thing.
Has it been a smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. I moved from Huntington Beach down to San Diego when I had leads of getting a position as a new doctor. I worked at a few offices prior to starting my business but after seeing my student loans continue skyrocketing with interest and seeing my income just barely filling my gas tank…I made an executive decision to quit those jobs once and for all. For 6 months I didn’t have a job, and I lived in the expensive city of San Diego. Great idea right? I had some funds saved up from when I worked with my family up in Los Angeles and decided to just pour it all into my practice.
I started out in a humble small office about 100 sq. ft., and within a 100 year old building. It was enough for me to get going though and to carry out my vision. It did well after my first year (which surprised me) and after that, I decided to expand to a new location which is now currently the Kearny Mesa office. It took a lot of man power and hours and funds to get that place launched, but it has been one of my most proud accomplishments.
Just with any ups, there are downs. I was in Colorado working the Dew Tour (pro skiing and snowboarding event) and got called home with the most devastating news. I had opened my office in the beginning of 2016 and my Dad suddenly passed away at the end of 2016. It really put me in such a hard spot trying to run the show and put my emotions aside. After he passed, there were so many events that just kept hitting me. We had to close his business, plan for his services, and it was such a dark time in my life. Nothing is ever ever perfect. There are so many details I could go over to help you guys understand what I went through, but that is a story for another time. Needless to say….this road has been full of cracks, potholes, dips, closures, and detours. But one thing is for sure….if you keep pushing, keep fueling that fire with nothing but positivity, clear thoughts, and hold onto your strengths…you too…can make it through anything and no road is too difficult.
Never ever forfeit your dreams or your wants and needs just because something bad has happened. You need to understand that the show must always go on.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Cabui Sports Medicine – Chiropractic, Recovery, & Wellness story. Tell us more about the business.
My business is a state of the art facility that specializes in care for athletes and just about anyone. We offer chiropractic, acupuncture, health coaching, massage therapy, bloodwork/lab testing, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, recovery/rehabilitation, deep muscle/percussion therapy, Instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization (graston), normatec compression, and now also cryotherapy and much much more. I myself specialize in chiropractic and sports medicine. A typical session with me will take about 30-45 minutes and sometimes an hour. I am not the average chiropractor that will just adjust you and send you on your way after 2 minutes. I understand as a human being, you are more than just your pain. I strive to spend time with you and make sure I address all your complaints thoroughly. What I am most proud of is my honesty. I will never sell you a package, scare you into getting care, and make you pay to come back all the time. If I know I can help you, I will. If I cannot, I always make sure you will be at the right place so that you are taken care of correctly. In the end, you know your body best and I am here to facilitate that healing process. You are your best doctor.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I think that Chiropractic has always been the butt end of all medical jokes. We are definitely the underdogs though. People still don’t think chiropractors are real doctors. But that is okay. Over the next 5-10 years I foresee a huge positive shift in the holistic health industry. Everyone is going to be looking back and seeing that medications and excessive surgeries were not the answer. In fact, most people already know that, yet they do not take the responsibility to make their health a priority. People have lost so many of their family members to cancer, diabetes, and a plethora of other diseases and they are finally waking up to understand health the right way. The food industry is already changing. They have accepted that their products are making people sick, so they have altered their formulas and have gone organic. This is the same path for the medical industry. They are learning to send their patients to Chiropractors and Holistic Practitioners. They need to tell their patients what is the truth and what is the right thing to do. Masking diseases, over prescribing, and horrible nutritional advice is not how to help your fellow human beings. I believe 100% that the Chiropractic/ Holistic Health industry will rise. There is no doubt in that. You have to go back to your roots. Eat well and move well.
