Today we’d like to introduce you to Eliza Friedman.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born and raised in Romania until the age of 22 when I moved to the United States. Some of my most vivid memories are of watching my parents constantly doing something good for humanity and being so passionate about helping others. I knew then, at a very young age, that no matter what I was going to do when I grew up, whether as a business or a job, it would definitely have a “giving back” aspect to it.
My Mother was a school teacher and my Father was a well-respected Senior Priest in our community. Both instilled great values in me, which I carry with me and would like to pass on to my three children, Nicole, Lily and Ryan. I truly believe that leading by example is the best way and I hope that they grow up to be kind, generous and self-sufficient.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When we started in 2005, we faced the same challenges most new businesses with an innovative approach face. Those first few years were a bit challenging, just because charities are normally looking for items that are being donated 100%. Since our inception, it’s been our desire not to open retail stores and have large advertising budgets to build our brand. We decided to design our products and our company to cater exclusively to the world of fundraising for wonderful organizations.
As we started partnering with many non-profits, they saw the level of professionalism, the personal attention to detail, the elegance that we add to their event, the memories created for the patrons and most importantly, the high amount of funds raised from the jewelry, they started booking us on the spot for their following event and referring us to other organizations. In no time, we became very busy and had the great pleasure of partnering with hundreds of non-profits nationwide, while never losing sight of the integral role we play in their fundraising efforts.
For those fundraising events that are in our area (San Diego, Orange County and Los Angeles), I attend personally and assist with every aspect that silent auctions entail, from providing the description of the items in advance, showing up a few hours prior to the event to set up the jewelry and the Giving Tree and staying until the end when we designate the items to the winners.
Being a part and contributing to each event, meeting the donors, which are the very soul of each event, that’s my absolute favorite part!! The guests being so complimentary of the jewelry, along with the elegant displays I create, continuously motivates me to do even more. Having run my company for the past 13 years, it never gets old. Before every event, I get excited and I just can’t wait to be there to bring my positive attitude, my happy smile and to listen to the stories.
The events that are in other parts of the country, we service remotely, taking care of every detail and providing a turnkey service.
Please tell us about Jewels With A Purpose.
When I started in 2005, I took a very unique approach. Instead of retailing my designs, I made a decision that the majority of the proceeds will go to charitable causes. From day one, Jewels With A Purpose has been designing and providing our jewels specifically for fundraising purposes.
The way it works, we partner with various non-profit organizations nationwide and we include our jewelry as part of their silent auctions during their annual galas and other fundraisers they host. Our designs are very popular. The patrons love the jewels and feel great knowing that it benefits the cause they support, resulting in raising thousands of dollars for any fundraising benefit. We are known for our exclusive designs and for our Giving Tree, which brings a high level of elegance and excitement at any event and patrons look forward to participating.
