Meet Esla Andrew of Narrow-Gauge Designs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Esla Andrew.

Esla, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Close to three years ago I dusted off my high school beading talents in order to make a bracelet I just couldn’t get out of my head. I visited a local bead store and was drawn to all of the natural gemstones and Hematite in particular. At the time, I was becoming more and more interested in the healing properties of gemstones and I chose Hematite not only for its color but also for its supposed grounding properties.

As soon as I got home I layed everything out on the kitchen table and started creating the bracelet I had envisioned. I wore it practically every day and it made me so happy to create something that actually lasted longer than a clean kitchen… As a stay-at-home mom of three, so much of what I (we) do disappears before I can relax and enjoy my hard work. As time went on, I was receiving compliments from friends and family so I started making them as gifts.

One day while I was driving my kids to school, I noticed all of the bracelets that had started collecting on my wrist and it was in that moment I realized I had found my niche. Something that made me happy and helped me relax. I knew at that moment I wanted to share it with other women. Ideas began flooding in and I got really excited and inspired.

Has it been a smooth road?
I still feel I’m so new to this and I can only imagine that the largest obstacles are still ahead of me. Every day this business pushes me and makes me go further than what is comfortable. Some days I can’t stop beading and the day is not long enough to get everything made that is in my head. Other days I’m overwhelmed and uninspired.

Fortunately, those days don’t last very long. It is definitely a rollercoaster and I think a lot of people can relate to that.

I’ve been doing a lot of local markets this year and one of the absolute hardest things to do is stand there and have your heart out on a table while people walk by. Sometimes they stop and sometimes they don’t. I’m getting better at handling that each time and when someone absolutely loves my work it makes it all worthwhile… when they walk away excited and feeling good.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Narrow-Gauge Designs – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Narrow-Gauge Designs specializes in minimalist style bracelets using only natural gemstones. The business was named after the Narrow-Gauge railroads that are “flexible” enough to traverse through mountain passes and historic mining towns while the stones and bracelets behind the name give women the “power” and style to traverse through life.

It is funny sometimes how things come full circle. I have always been infatuated with ghost towns and history AND back in the 70’s both my parents worked in the Sunnyside Mine in Silverton, Colorado..where the Durango and Silverton Narrow-Gauge Railway runs. It all worked out so beautifully to combine so many of my loves and a family history. We currently have a Silverton Collection for this very reason.

Narrow-Gauge Designs prides itself on lightweight and unique designs. No two bracelets are alike, partly to nature but also to the way the patterns are created. Each bracelet is made in four standard sizes so each person gets a custom fit. It seems standard to have numerous sizes for clothing, shoes, necklaces and rings… yet bracelets seem to be adjustable or one size fits all. Narrow-Gauge Designs’ bracelets are made for your wrist. If our standard sizes don’t fit… we offer additional customer services.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Whenever I take my children on a field trip to Torrey Pines or spend time at any of the beaches, or drive through Old Escondido or Point Loma I am just in awe of what San Diego has to offer. It’s endless. I constantly catch myself saying “I can’t believe we live here.” We are so fortunate to live so close to so many different experiences. I love it! We can have the city just as easily as we can go out to Julian. It’s just so impressive.

I think I’m with a lot of people when I say could do without the traffic.
