Today we’d like to introduce you to Ivy Guild.
Ivy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up in Phoenix, AZ, I was always interested in both science and art. When it came time for me to go to college, I went to the University of San Diego prepared to study Biology with a Marine Biology emphasis. After one semester, I realized I was making art whenever I wasn’t doing my lab homework and I decided to make the switch to the art department. I graduated from the University of San Diego in May 2016 with a dual-degree in Visual Arts and Art History. I have worked at the New Children’s Museum, Lux Art Institute, Brighton Press, and I currently work in academia and as a studio assistant to two San Diego artists. I have exhibited at Jonathan Ferrara Art Gallery, the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library, the William D. Cannon Art Gallery, San Diego Art Institute, and Sebastopol Center for the Arts. Today, I’m applying to MFA programs in Studio Art practice with a desire to continue my education and the development of my practice in a new city.
Has it been a smooth road?
Each artist experiences their own trials and tribulations in their practice, but they ebb and flow with productivity and creativity. There are wonderful studio days and days where I look at ideas that I wrote down and shake my head at myself. For me, it has been really important to separate myself from my work when I’m in critiques, otherwise you’ll take commentary too personally. I’ve had people tell me they love my work and I’ve had people tell me they hate my work, it comes with the territory of what I do.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Artist – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My practice fluctuates between fiber arts, photography, sculpture, book arts, video, and performance. I operate between these disciplines, assuming roles of photographer, anthropologist, and feminist, inventing hybrid processes, as needed. My work is research-driven by data collected through a variety of lenses, including my personal history, social media, contemporary and outdated publications, and photography. The work operates through analog and digital technology to question sociopolitical issues, cultural traditions, and white privilege.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
The year-round wonderful weather and natural habitats are my favorite part of San Diego, because you can be outside hiking, swimming, surfing, biking, sailing, etc. almost any day of the year. Not too many cities have Hollywood-perfect weather that often.
The traffic and increasing tourism are unfortunate, because they are hard on our city, particularly the natural habitats that make it so unique. But, I can hardly blame people for wanting to visit San Diego, I’m a transplant from Phoenix myself.
