Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenn Edwards.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am a portrait and wedding photographer based out of sunny Southern California. Together with my wife, Jenn, who also shares in this passion, specialize in creating memories. Our passion grew so much that we decided that we wanted more than a hobby.
After a family trip to Panama in 2011 and feeling this passion come alive once again, I knew there was more I could do to fuel my photography craft. Being self-taught, we feel confident that our work speaks for itself. However what we are really passionate about it making your special day last forever.
With eagerness, perseverance and a lot of hard work, we did it! If you care about photography and the long lasting memories that it creates, we want to share in your celebration!
Mike – I am originally from Panama, however I was raised here in Southern California with my dad, mom, brother, sister and eventually her husband and my twin nieces. After graduating from Vanguard with a Bachelors in Science, I decided to go to Bible College where I met my wife. I enjoy working as a scientist, however enjoy even more capturing people, places & things.
Jenn – I was born and raised in Southern California, however I have a heart for the country. Deep down inside I’m a country girl that dreams of living on a farm raising bucking bulls and other animals. I have an older son, Christopher, whom I adore. Even so, we want to have a family together. Meeting Mike in Bible College was an answered prayer and I am grateful for him every day. I left my 20 year career as a fraud investigator and have been a full time employee of Mike Edwards Photography since October 2016 and loving it!
We relocated to the San Diego area and we LOVE it! Together we enjoy church, eating out, outdoor activities, pajama days, spending time with friends and family and last but not least photography.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The first 6 years wasn’t so smooth. We both worked full time jobs, one of them (Jenn’s) being a very demanding career. Then we moved to San Diego and it felt like we were starting all over. Having to meet new people, find new friends and potential clients wasn’t easy. Not to mention the financial burden of only having one salary. But some tough decisions, (Jenn leaving her career to work on the business full time) has yielded some amazing results. Focused dedication and time and our business has grown a lot in the last 12 months and for that we are grateful.
Please tell us about Mike Edwards Photography.
Our business is about an experience. We believing that providing great quality photos is the basics. We want to help our clients be the best version of themselves when they are with us. Confident. Happy. Joyful. Having fun and laughing. We want to capture what we know is inside of them. The true essence of the love they feel toward their other half and those around them. We want them to know we are thinking about them through the process of scheduling a photo session to planning a wedding. We do little things to let them know we are thinking about them and we appreciate them. It’s the least we could do. Our goal is that when they see their photos, they remember how they felt that day, which was amazing…….. Having experienced the difference with Mike and Jenn 🙂
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Oooohhh that is a good one! 🙂
We’ve learned that we can say no. We learned that growing a business with a firm foundation doesn’t require desperation. Also that not everyone has the same vision we do or passion we have for photography and that is OK! For some it’s about price. For others it’s about memories and the experience of it all. We learned that we have an ideal client and that it’s not everyone. We learned that integrity is above all else. We learned that we can’t build a business on our own, that we need a network of people that will support us and our dreams. We learned that your business will not succeed through the support of family and friends. We learned that there will always be one or two people that you can never satisfy, no matter what you do but for that one person there are 100 who will love you. So we go after the 99. And lastly, we learned that doing business with your spouse, takes compromise, communication and a vision.
