Meet Joy Giovanni of Zen Temple Wellness in Sorrento Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joy Giovanni.

Joy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
In 2001, I became interested in studying natural medicine. There were very few programs available at that time. Massage therapy was the 1st course required. It came naturally to me and I began to love this healing modality. At the time, I was a personal trainer and transitioned into modeling and acting, taking a break from everything else. After some small success in acting, I decided to return to massage therapy. I spent some time studying massage techniques such as deep tissue, Lomi, and Trigger Point in Los Angeles and had a small massage practice based in Burbank before relocating to San Diego in 2011. Once in San Diego, I continued to study additional massage modalities such as Shiatsu and Reflexology and was introduced to Reiki. This was a huge missing puzzle piece for me since, although I was classically trained in more than 10 modalities, a large part of my work has always been intuitive. After spending a couple years in a spa setting, I realized that I needed to start my own practice again to better serve the needs of my clients and Zen Temple Wellness was born in 2014. Since then, I have added several techniques to my tool belt and have been able to continue to grow with both my therapeutic massage work and my intuitive work as well.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The biggest obstacle for me is work/life balance. I love my work so much that sometimes it can be difficult for me to not overwork myself. I truly care about my clients so I genuinely want to stay late to help if they are in great need, for example. This is still something I am constantly working on. There are just not enough days in the week!

Zen Temple Wellness – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
What sets me apart from my competition as a massage therapist is my ability communicate, and to use my understanding of the way the body moves, blended with traditional massage techniques and intuition. I ask a lot of questions and actually listen to the clients’ answers. When the client arrives for any session, whether it is massage, Reiki, or psychic work we spend a few minutes discussing their primary concerns, aches and pain of the week, goals for the session and whatever else is effecting them in the moment. This helps us prioritize our time together to achieve the best results during the session. The client is always a part of the process, start to finish. During the session itself, I “listen” to the body. Tension patterns and trigger points tell me a great deal about the way the body moves or does not move. I am also able to “tune in” to the client on an intuitive level. Basically, I use everything I know to benefit them during the session.

Something I am known for are my sessions that combine half massage and half Reiki in the same session. This is the best of both worlds and can be very healing on all levels. There are things Reiki can accomplish that massage does not.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success for me is feeling happy and fulfilled in all areas.
