Meet Karla Chavez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karla Chavez.

Karla, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve always had a passion for arts and crafts and have the fondest childhood memories creating things with my hands. In 2002, I was introduced to jewelry making and instantly fell in love, finding a profound sense of purpose and fulfillment. My life had taken me on many adventures including working for various non-profit organizations and taking on various leadership roles in local organizations. Finally, in 2011, the energy of my world shifted, and I was finally on the path to fully embrace my artistic calling.

My journey has not always been an easy one but it is in my struggles that I found my strength. It took me going through a stressful, life-changing experience to finally embrace the opportunity for a fresh start while deepening my journey of self-healing, transformation and spiritual growth!

In 2012, I became a member of the Foundation for Women, which ignited the desire to turn a lifelong hobby of crafting into a part-time business. My journey had finally taken me to embark on the wild ride that is Serenity Designs.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Starting a business has its challenges like anything else, but it’s been rewarding and most definitely been a learning experience. I never expected to journey into entrepreneurship, and with no background in business, I’ve had to learn through trial and error. I’ve sacrificed personal time and personal finances, but in this journey, I’m determined in establishing a successful and sustainable business, one that remains true to my vision.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Serenity Designs is a collection of handmade jewelry and accessories that are meant to inspire and empower you on your life journey! Serenity Designs jewelry is handcrafted to carry the power of intention through the healing properties of the crystals and gemstones used to create it.

As an artist, my creative process involves going through stages of visualization, creation, and execution of ideas.  Each piece of jewelry is a form of self-expression that provides a glimpse into my unique spiritual, physical and emotional journey. A little piece of me goes into each and every piece of jewelry I create.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up in San Diego, a border city that is so rich and vibrant in culture, and being exposed to both Mexican and American history, culture and traditions, made it easy to embrace being bilingual and bicultural at a young age.  As a first-generation San Diegan raised by immigrant parents, I grew up proud of my Mexican heritage.  This influence can be found in my “Cultura Collection,” where I incorporate major elements of my culture including symbols, traditions and vibrant colors.
