Meet Laura Cunningham of Laura Cunningham Art in Encinitas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Cunningham.

Laura, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have been an artist for as long as I can remember. Growing up, art supplies were always available in my Mom’s home art studio. I also remember watching a lot of Jacques Cousteau with my Dad. As a marine biology teacher, my Dad instilled in me a respect for the ocean and marine life. My parents are the two most influential people in my life and my art.

After a life-changing event about 8 years ago, I dove into my artwork as a method of healing and expression. The images I created were nostalgic in nature, reaching back to a time of my carefree childhood of summers spent at the beach. Capturing these memories onto canvas was therapeutic and I shared the process with my daughter as I would often ask her opinion on my work in progress. I began selling my art in a local boutique and slowly gained a small following.

Has it been a smooth road?
A lot of trial and error, learning how to be more business savvy. Being creative is one thing, but if you don’t run the business end you will go nowhere. It’s a lot of work wearing two hats.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Laura Cunningham Art story. Tell us more about the business.
I create a unique style of art that combines photography and graphic design to demonstrate the moods and overall beauty of the ocean… I like to tell people that I offer “affordable ocean views”.

My work is available in several retail stores as well as online, reaching both the domestic and international customers. Maybe one thing that sets me apart is that I really enjoy working directly with clients to plan installations in their home or office. I also collaborate with interior designers and art consultants, offering custom designs per client specifications.

I split my time between my coastal-inspired art and also as a graphic designer: projects include t-shirt graphics, catalogs, advertising pieces, brochures, posters, logos, invitations, business cards.
