Meet Laura Monk of CorePower Yoga

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Monk.

Laura, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started doing yoga while I was finishing college in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Yoga hadn’t quite caught on at my University gym and I bought a DVD of a Vinyasa class taught to house music – I instantly fell in love. Yoga was like nothing I had ever done before.

Years later while I was living in Chicago, I had a very stressful job and yoga started showing back up in my life through CorePower. I started taking Yoga Sculpt at the studio closest to me and then jumped into the Teacher Training program. Eventually, the 2 classes I taught a week turned into 7, and I left my stressful production job completely.

I was offered an opportunity with CPY to move to California and I immersed myself within the San Diego CorePower community. CPY has transformed who I am as a leader and a yogi.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Moving across the country and not knowing anyone can be daunting, but CorePower Yoga was a welcoming place to land. There were some struggles in my personal life that made the idea of walking into a studio, holding space, incredibly challenging. I have learned that a room filled with yogis looking to you to lead them through a class is exactly what you need when you are feeling less than whole. My CPY students have become my most important teachers. I count on them just as much as they count on me.

I was offered a CPY leadership position at the same time I had entered a crossroads in my life, and I had no idea what my future held. I said yes to the opportunity, and my life shifted to reveal that I was exactly where I needed to be.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with CorePower Yoga – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
CorePower Yoga is an intensely physical workout rooted in the mindfulness of yoga. We offer a combination of a killer workout, mindfulness, high energy and a true sense of community for students of all levels. A class that’s unique to CorePower Yoga and one of our most popular is Yoga Sculpt which incorporates free weights into your vinyasa flow.

As a company, we have 180+ studios in 23 states and it has been pretty amazing to watch our community grow and make connections through a shared yoga practice. Music is one of my strongest passions, and it is something that drives my classes. My Yoga Sculpt classes are taught to a strong beat which creates an incredible energy throughout the class. At times I feel like a choreographer leading my students through a challenging, but mindful workout (and work in!)

Who else deserves credit – have you had mentors, supporters, cheerleaders, advocates, clients or teammates that have played a big role in your success or the success of the business? If so – who are they and what role did they plan / how did they help.
My Regional Director, Beth O’Reilly has been incredibly supportive throughout my journey with CPY. She was a mentor to me when I moved from the South San Diego to our North San Diego region.

I also couldn’t ask for a better community at the studio in Del Mar. The instructors and students have become my everyday life and family. They make me want to be successful as a leader and drive me to push them to be the truest forms of themselves.

Lastly, our local Area Leaders, Stephanie Solovy and Marissa Hamill are the best support for our entire San Diego team. Their mentorship and dedication are appreciated, and it allows me to be present and confident in my own leadership role in and outside of the CPY studio.
