Meet Laurie Libman Wilson of Studio Penny Lane

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laurie Libman Wilson.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Laurie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Studio Penny Lane was created in honor and memory of my dear friend Conrad Morales.

Studio Penny Lane was created to promote a global educational movement fostering Mindful Awareness for children.  The goal is to positively reset the direction of how we teach our children by eliminating patterns of negativity fear and helplessness and to replace them with the tools to love without condition, dream courageously and recognize and nurture each child’s true gifts.  Our intention is to empower youth to create positive change in there own lives and ultimately their families, schools, communities, and the world.

Every time I find a penny, I think of my dear friend Conrad who is truly my Penny From Heaven.  I am reminded that many things will happen in life that we do not have control over.  But it is how we choose to respond that determines how we feel, how we live, and how we affect others.  I am grateful for the opportunity to have known Conrad and for the inspiration to create Studio Penny Lane:  this would not have been, had our paths not crossed.  May it shed some light on an unspeakable tragedy.

Has it been a smooth road?
Nope… nothing smooth about this road. It has been one of the most rewarding and heartwarming experiences I have ever been a part of and one of the most challenging.

Being an entrepreneur is a definite roller coaster.  I started with literally two pennies and a whole lot of faith, determination and a deep knowing this is what I am meant to do. We have been nearly homeless, bankrupt and almost lost my business to a partnership that didn’t go well, just to mention a few bumps.

Even with all the hardships, there is always something deep inside me that knows I am exactly where I am meant to be, as well as I know with all that I am; this is my purpose, it is something that comes through me. I look at these experiences and what I could learn from them, and I think the biggest constant reminder is humility, vulnerability and being flexible because it is always changing.

Another challenge that I have faced is being ahead of the curve in terms of “Mindfulness.” When I started with this vision of a Mindful Movement about 10 years ago, even before the concept of Studio Penny Lane, most people had no idea what I was talking about, they just thought it was a bunch of whooohoooey, and there wasn’t the research that is available today, it was just the beginning and so far from mainstream.

So trying to convey this message was tricky and even trickier through a product. Now, “Mindfulness” is a household word and it touches the covers of many major publications on a consistent base, as well as, social media channels, platforms, and apps. Often times, being ahead of the curve isn’t much different than being behind the curve, you still are not on point.

Fortunately this deep feeling of purpose and determination has kept me going, and I definitely wouldn’t have been able to hold on if it wasn’t for the people that I am surrounded with, I don’t know who or where I would be without the love and support of my family and friends (all of which have stuffed envelopes, and more), my boyfriend (who has been my biggest cheerleader), my wasband (was my husband, he runs the company), and my incredibly dedicated tribe.

I am eternally grateful to all of them as well as our amazing customers and their stories, this is the core of what keeps me going. With all my heart through the ups and downs, I love that I have had an opportunity to be part of something so much bigger than myself.

-If I could offer any bit of advice, it would be this.

— Be in alignment with your true nature and what brings you joy.  If you believe with all your heart this is what you are meant to do, then it is.  The road will be challenging, but keep moving in the direction of your dreams with determination and perseverance.

— Trust that you are exactly where you are meant to be, even if it feels difficult, uncertain, or scary.  Find the lesson, learn from it, and move forward, because whatever you are learning in the moment, will serve you at some point.

—Be Grateful.  As hard as it might seem at times, look at the small things, even if it is simply the fact that you are breathing.  You have purpose- we all do.  Remind yourself that what you are doing matters, remind yourself of this everyday.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
What we like to say about Studio Penny Lane, is that we have partnered with the Penny as a symbol of Gratitude and Mindful Change, Mindful Change is the awareness that anyone can change the outcome of their life when they are aware they have a choice.

We create tools that inspire daily practices of Gratitude and Mindfulness using the penny as that symbol, our little moto is, “Every time you see a penny, take a moment to acknowledge something you are Grateful for.” This truly helps to train your brain to do just that, which keeps Gratitude top of mind.

So whether you are using one of our Gratitude Apothecary Jars, or wearing a piece of jewelry, you are constantly reminded to simply take a moment… and have a positive thought on purpose. The impact of this simple practice can reach beyond measure.

What I am most proud of about Studio Penny Lane is that it really does touch peoples hearts and change their lives… people truly feel something, and it is magic, that is the biggest gift, and I am so thankful and humbled to be a part of it.

I believe what sets us apart from others is the story behind Studio Penny Lane, it is far too much to write in a few sentences, however somehow we are guided to do amazing things and Studio Penny Lane has been able to bring meaning and awareness to the importance of Mindfulness Education as well as purpose and light to a tragic story that needs to be told, so we can prevent other similar stories from ever happening.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I feel like our city is a wonderful place to do what we do and truthfully, every city.  What makes San Diego special is the Southern California vibe, and being more open minded and progressive in thinking.  It has been an amazing starting point for that reason.  Mindfulness, is about being present, without judgement, as well as connection, to ourselves, each other and to nature and being grateful, I see that a lot here, or at least people are very open to it and really try to get into that space, so they can embody these practices.

I think it can be hard on young people, because of competition, social media, etc.  I would love to see more Mindfulness Education in schools, I believe when children can see themselves as enough and focusing on what comes natural to them, and simply by being who they are and having confidence in that, we would have far less comparison (judgement), bullying and a lot more acceptance, kindness and compassion, not to mention an increase in test scores, because their energies would be focused on more positive things.   Another challenge that is hard for people is the cost of living, especially if you are young, it can be very challenging, we are living in very different times…  All the more reason to have a great Mindfulness and Gratitude practice, focusing more on what you do have, and being present and perhaps a little connection to our devices and little more human connection.

All in all it is a perfect place to do what we do.
