Today we’d like to introduce you to Lorena Woods.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Lorena. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
My name is Lorena, and I’m originally from Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico. I moved to San Diego on December 8, 2011, a day after my last day of school for my undergrad. I had bags and everything I could fit in my old blue Nissan Sentra. If you ask me how wine started in my life I would probably need a whole book to explain, but if I needed to say it in only one page I would say that casualty was a big part of it, but I’m a big believer that casualty always happens for a reason.
One day walking the hallway of SDSU I peeked through a window in a classroom to see students doing a wine tasting, it was the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen, I never knew there was such thing, and people actually study for it… so clueless; regardless, that day I knew I must be part of it.
My research continued to understand why people studied wine, watched for the first time a movie called Somm “Into the bottle” 2012 on Netflix and after the movie ended I realized I just had what some call the “wine calling” and became aware of how much there is to learn! Terroir, history, climate, varietals, people, food, etc. The information was endless.
I’ve been drinking wine for probably ten years, within those ten years, I’m guessing only around 5-6 years of real wine appreciation drinking. My palette has gotten better when it comes to taste, but it’s not even close to where I want to be. For that reason, I’ve decided to keep learning and actually study for it, at the same time live amazing experiences and surround myself among people that love wine as I do.
I work now in the Aerospace industry, but I’m sure that with my passion to wine and business skills I have acquired throughout the years in the corporate world and the network I’m doing I’m sure one day I’ll be working/living full time the WINE dream.
Has it been a smooth road?
It’s been a hard process, having a full-time job not related to the wine industry has been hard in both roles since I’ve always been a person that always wants to give 100% in everything I do, it’s hard to not be able to give my full attention to my wine blog and site. In addition, in the wine industry practice is a key, and for me, not working with wines all day like other Somms that are in the industry getting to the next level is harder for me.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Lorena Wine Diary – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I’m a wine enthusiast, student, and blogger.
I want to become the first female Somm from Mexicali, Baja, Mexico.
My love for good music (Jazz, blues, soul, vintage music) and wine are my passion. I’m completely convinced that there’s a cosmic energy between them and when you combine music & wine, you enhance the experience to its full potential. I’ve been doing some research about it, and one day I’ll be able to share it with you all.
I want people to see my blog posts or Instagram account and dream together with me on what food can they pair with a Chablis or Pouilly-Fumé, or how what vinyl can they play while drinking a GSM from the Sothern Rhone. Music, Food, Wine, and Sophistication is what makes me unique and different from everyone else.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and the least?
BEST: culture, diversity, equality, weather, the proximity to another country, food, recreation activities, etc.
LEAST: roads, taxes, the beach is dirty, cost of living.
