Meet Mary Backer of Beacons, Inc. in North County – Carlsbad

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Backer.

Mary, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Beacons were born at the kitchen table by four moms of special needs adults in 2018. We were all frustrated by the lack of options available for our young adults with disabilities, particularly in the areas of vocational training and social interaction. We worked diligently to get incorporated and obtain our 501c3 nonprofit designation. We found a location to open up shop in Carlsbad close to Palomar Airport Rd and more importantly close to many businesses. The first service we offered was Club Beacons. Club Beacons is a social outlet for adults with disabilities. Two weekend nights a month participants can have a light meal, hang out with their friends, watch a movie, play games, sing karaoke or participate in a multitude of other activities. Next, we launched our first workshop in the Spring of 2019 funded in part by NFAR to work on vocational training. This past summer we offered weekly workshops in the areas of science, 3D art, and introduction to DJ’ing as well as others. In the Fall of 2019, we began offering vocational workshops funded by the San Diego Regional Center. Winter 2020 we will begin offering Tailored Day services which pair an individual to a Tailored Day Specialist to help the adult be able to explore job opportunities, access the community or otherwise participate in activities that they are interested in pursuing.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not always. The government shut down delayed our 501c3 designation and zoning issues within the City of Carlsbad delayed our Business License application from being approved. Those are now in place.
