Meet Pearl Preis of Pearl Preis Photography in Pacific Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Pearl Preis.

Pearl moved out to Pacific Beach with her husband in the early 90’s and has been shooting seriously ever since. She graduated with a degree in commercial /fine art but when the digital era came around, digital cameras and Photoshop as a darkroom changed everything and thus she focused on photography while still keeping her fine art touches woven throughout her photographic work which has given her an advantage in selling her work successfully.

She shoots everything from San Diego’s beautiful beaches and skies, to portraits and events. The beaches have become her studio and she does all her own editing at home. She sells her San Diego prints online and to many locals who want an artistic piece of their place on the planet on their walls.

She also captures many precious moments with families who want that special family portrait for generations to come and that kind of work has also led her to shoot many events such as weddings, bar mitzvahs, and other events around town for the local paper and for school foundations.

Has it been a smooth road?
Photography has been a pretty smooth road. Being self-taught in Photoshop was probably the biggest struggle. Selling work and finding clients takes work, but it’s necessary and you learn as you go, also having the internet at your fingertips helps you reach out to potential clients pretty easily, but you have to be persistent!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I started out shooting women’s portraits and being a woman photographer made it comfortable for women clients to want to work with me, especially since I started out doing a lot of boudoir photos.

I started getting known for that. Being on the beach a lot too has also paved the wave for surf photography, which I love, especially with all that sunlit water and physical action going on out there and I started getting a lot of traction for surf photography too.

I’m most proud of being self-taught in Photoshop and developing my own style through it and attracting clients because of my work that they would see and were drawn to. What sets me apart from others, I believe, is being an artist, it goes from taking a nice photo into taking a nice photo with a little more sparkle!

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes! so many stunning places to shoot around here, you can’t go wrong. If you are savvy enough online, you can easily reach a lot of people.

Wouldn’t change a thing.
