Meet Renee White of Royal Creations Hair

Today we’d like to introduce you to Renee White.

Renee, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I first started my business in my freshman year of college in November 2013. I was a typical college student searching for ways to make more money. I didn’t want to be that person just surviving off of financial aid and loans, and I also didn’t want to ask my parents for money. I always have had a love for the beauty industry but I knew cosmetology just wasn’t my thing either. I was obsessed with watching hair and beauty videos on YouTube since high school and I knew I wanted to be apart of the beauty world in some way. In college, I was a business major and I took a few entrepreneurship classes and I loved the idea of owning my own business. So I continued to do research on google and watching YouTube videos on how to start a business.

I started my business with just $200 and I purchased my first set of inventory. I then created a website and an Instagram page and launched my business on Black Friday in 2013. Almost immediately, business was booming! Purchasing virgin hair bundles were in at the time and it was just the thing to do. Since I was a college student, I wanted my brand to be affordable so that everyone would be able to purchase. I wanted to be able to cater to everyone but especially the college-age groups. Royal Creations Hair has greatly evolved over time and now we are selling more than virgin hair bundles. We have bundles, wigs, eyelashes, and more! Over the years, I have continued to keep my brand true to me and my goals by keeping it affordable but still making sure to have quality products.

Has it been a smooth road?
Like any business, it has its ups and downs along the way. In the beginning, business was actually pretty easy, gaining customers and sales were consistent. However, those times where I got busy in school and working multiple jobs, I had to focus my priorities elsewhere so around 2015-2018, I noticed a huge decrease in sales. There were months where I had 0 to maybe three sales that month. Barely making enough to pay my bills with the other job I had at the time. I struggled with advertisement since I really just didn’t have the time. It took me a while to realize that advertisement is key for a small business. But once I was able to clear my plate a little bit I jumped right back into business mode and did what I had to do to get business back to running great.

Royal Creations Hair is a hair company that sells virgin hair bundles, wigs, and more. Royal Creations is known for having quality hair at an affordable price. We specialize in selling virgin hair bundles and also something new we recently added was eyelashes. As a company, we are most proud that we are still here after almost seven years of business. As a black business owner of a small business, I have learned so much in how to keep a business going. So many businesses fail just within the first year because they lose too much money or just not patient in the process. Starting this business in college has developed me as a person so much and I am just looking forward to see what the future holds for Royal Creations. What sets us apart from competitors is that we keep the price affordable and still deliver quality! We also sell more than just bundles. We have multiple products on the site and are continuing to build our brand and consistently adding new things!

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love that San Diego is so diverse and that there are so many small businesses that we can all support. With me being in the beauty industry as a black woman, I don’t like that there are not very many black-owned beauty supply stores in San Diego. Although many beauty supplies do cater to ethnic hair, it would just be nice to see our own people of color running those shops. One of the goals at Royal Creations is to open a fully black-owned beauty supply storefront.
