Meet Stacey Marsh of Lovely Baby Photography in Carlsbad

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stacey Marsh.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Stacey. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I distinctly remember the day that I brought each of my children home from the hospital as newborn babies. These tiny, perfect, amazing little human beings who changed my life forever. I remember their “new baby” smell, and the noises that they made as they slept. I remember spending my evenings examining their tiny toes and counting their little fingers, trying to soak it all in. I could sit and just stare at them for hours. People would tell me, “it goes by so fast… soak it in”. Now that my “babies” are now 11 and 13, that statement “it goes by so fast” is an understatement. They are both in Middle School, and I look back and can’t even believe that I no longer have babies of my own. They are big kids.

I was not a professional photographer when I first had my children. I looked into newborn portraits at the time, and my husband vetoed spending the money at the time. Looking back, this is a huge regret (my husband agrees now). If we could go back, we would have spent any amount of money to have that snippet of the beginning of each of their life, frozen in time. What I would not give to have professional images on my wall and a precious album to give to each of them when they get married and have a family of their own. We cannot get time back. Photographs are a way to freeze time and remember in a visual way.

I started photographing my children as a hobby. Nine years ago, I made the decision to create portraits as a business. I absolutely love what I do. I specialize in maternity, newborn and first year portraits, and have had a dedicated studio for 5 out of those 9 years.

I love working with families during such a happy and exciting time in their lives. Maternity portraits are a great way to capture the essence of that brief nine months… and I love the process of making mom feel beautiful during these sessions. I provide a selection of over 50 gorgeous maternity gowns for my clients to use during their session.

Newborn sessions are my favorite. I’ve photographed over 400 babies over the years, and it just never gets old. The excitement of setting up for the session…. pulling out all of my beautiful vintage layering pieces and placing them in gorgeous bowls and props. Babies will be safe in my hands, as I have been doing this for so long. Parents worry that their baby won’t sleep for me. Parents then leave the studio, calling me the “baby whisperer”. I have many tricks that I use to gently lull your sweet baby to sleep for their session.

I also adore milestones (usually 6 months) and the one year mark. I offer adorable “Cake Smash” sessions in the studio. These are adorable images of your little one to celebrate and mark that first year. I carry wardrobe for boys and girls, and the cake is also included!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has definitely not always been a smooth road. The first four years, I did all of my work on location. With newborn babies, there is a lot to bring along to an in home session.

My 5th year in business, I took the leap to move into a commercial studio space. It was tough the first year, but I’m so glad that I took the risk! My work improved so much, and I had consistency with each session. I loved having a space for all of my props and a place to shoot and meet with my clients.

We relocated in July 2016 from Northern California to Carlsbad. I took another risk with this move, by signing another commercial studio space lease, just 30 days after moving our family here. My business was strong in Northern California, and I had no client base here to start with. It’s very hard to relocate a business! I’m a little over a year in, and I’ve been working my hiney off to get my business noticed in the greater San Diego area. My studio is half the size as it was in Northern California, but when I walk into my studio, it puts a smile on my face. I keep it warm and cozy, and a relaxing place for moms and dads.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Lovely Baby Photography story. Tell us more about the business.
I am a portrait artist, specializing in maternity, newborn and first year photography.

I take pride in giving our clients a hands on experience from start to finish. I will guide you through the process with a Preparation Guide before your session. In the end, we really want each of our families to go home with heirloom tangible products in their hands. And we are here to walk each client through that process. We offer beautiful wall art and high quality albums. We offer a gorgeous and unique wood wall art product – you have to see it to understand how unique it is! We have samples in the studio for clients to peruse, while we are shooting their newborn session. And we meet with each family to help and guide them through the process of ordering. We don’t want to just hand you a CD and leave you to figure out what to do with the beautiful images that we’ve created (we do have digital packages available as well). We offer more than that.

When I lived in Northern California, I had families come back to us year after year. That is what I’m most proud of. I photographed babies that are now in grade school, and we have gotten to know their families over the years. Now that we’ve moved to Carlsbad, we have even had three families come to us here for beach family photos! I love my clients, and I am excited to build those relationships here in San Diego as well.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck is an interesting idea. I really don’t believe that luck is how I’ve created my business. I have worked very hard to go from a mom with a camera, to get to where I am today. Sure, there have been some lucky moments. Mostly I just feel that I have had good luck in finding amazing clients that I have bonded with over the years!
