Meet Tammy Green of Custom Cool TV Covers

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tammy Green.

Tammy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In 2007, my husband had put a “regular indoor” TV outside on our patio. This was before many people had thought about doing such a thing. It was not the norm. For protection, he would drape a beach towel over the TV and even wrap the TV in a trash bag if we were expecting Rain. The look of a towel and trash bag was not going over well with either of us. He started searching online and in retail stores for a TV cover. There truly was no such thing.

We needed to have one made for us. Turns out, we knew an upholsterer who created the interiors for high-end Boats. We provided some basic measurements and what we got back was very NICE! It was high-quality marine vinyl and it even had a Palm Tree on it. My husband encouraged, for about six months, this friend to start making and selling TV covers but he was not interested in starting a new business. He did offer to make the TV covers if we’re to get more orders.

I overheard this conversation and said, “I’ll start a business!” Within an hour, I had the company name and logo just as it to this day. I asked a friend to build a webpage to have a presence on the internet and three days later, Custom Cool TV Covers was born. The one page website had a basic description of what we could do and a phone number to call to place your order. I got a call within twelve hours.

We’ve all heard the saying, “Fake it until you Make it!” That’s exactly what I did. With each call, I went with the flow of that conversation and figured out what to ask them. Not sure anyone really knew I had NO IDEA what I was doing, but I can say that in eleven years, I’ve truly not had one TV Cover straight out returned because it was made wrong. That fact I’m very proud of. With well over 1000 TV covers made every year, that’s GREAT in my humble opinion! My advice to others has always been, just start your business now. You don’t have to have everything figured out before you start. Just jump in and start.

Has it been a smooth road?
The first nine months were awesome! When I started, I truly thought, if I got four orders a month, that would be incredible and fun! Let’s just say I was wrong about that and a money making full-time business begun that first month, March 2008- eleven years strong.

The stumbling block was at the nine month mark. I found competition online and it was my seamstress at the time! I was so upset but I did not approach them at that point. Obviously, they thought they could take me out of the picture and do everything themselves. Let’s just say I learned from them and they learned from me and we parted ways.

I buckled down that weekend and found a new upholstery team. We updated the website to reflect new and improved design options and I stopped sending the original seamstress orders within four days of discovering their online business. When one door slams shut, a new door opens and I’ve had a wonderful working relationship with the current upholstery team for 10+ years.

Custom Cool TV Covers continues to be the highest quality and most custom option for outdoor TV Covers.

Tell us more about your business.
We make weather resistant outdoor TV Covers. When the business started in 2008, there was no other company offering Outdoor TV Covers. You could buy covers for patio furniture, heat lamps, and tables but not a TV Cover.

Of course all of these years later there is lots of competition but nothing compares to our quality and design options. Custom Cool TV Covers has always been the high-end option. When I’m questioned about why so expensive, I’m happy to explain and not be apologetic about it. I’m a very hands-on owner. Though I’m not the one actually making the TV Covers, I am the one who works with every client to ensure their TV Cover is made to fit their TV and Mount. We have so many options for colors and designs to match anyone’s backyard decor.

If you want a brown TV Cover with Green Palm Trees, we can do that. If you want a Blue TV Cover with Lime Hibiscus Flower, we can do that too. The options are endless and so fun! We’ve also built up a great reputation with A/V Dealer/TV Installer Companies who want to offer their clients a High-End Option for covering their TV’s that have been installed in the backyard. It’s a trend to have an awesome living space outback. Not just in San Diego but all over the country. No one wants a trash bag over their TV when you can get a Custom Cool TV Cover!

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Originally I gave this company an 8-10 year life. We are at the 11+ year mark.

I’d have to say Amazon has caused a dramatic shift in our orders in the last two years because it’s so easy to pop on Amazon and order a Cover and receive the same day. It’s hard to compete with that quick turn around. Though we can make a Custom Cool TV Cover right here in San Diego in a day or two and it’s so much nicer, it’s just difficult to convey that side by side option when you’re offering items online.
