Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Wise.
Amy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
From the time I was a kid, I loved photography. Although, as a kid, I typically chopped off my subjects’ heads. Since then I’ve gotten much better. It wasn’t until my mid-twenties that I started getting serious and began doing wedding and family photography. During that time, I also honed in on my landscape photography skills with the goal of translating all the beauty from the natural world into print. I’ve grown up in the outdoors so there have been endless opportunities to capture breathtaking landscapes.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Being a photographer in a very saturated market is a constant struggle and I certainly lived the starving artist lifestyle when I first started. The best advice I can offer is to find mentors (men or women) who have been through it and can help you develop a business plan. Sticking to your plan will help you avoid panicking and floundering. It can be scary being self-employed so giving yourself as much structure as possible will help in the end. Also, remember to give back as you move forward in your career.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Amy Wise Photography – what should we know?
I’m obsessed with the outdoors, and I spend most of my weekends climbing, mountaineering, mountain biking, canyoneering – basically anything that gets me outside. Spending that much time in nature has given me a lot of opportunities to capture the things I love – rugged mountainscapes, remote international locations, deserts of the Southwest, plus a whole lot more. I want my work to reflect nature as it is at any given moment without the need to over-manipulate colors or the scene.
So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
The recent media coverage on equal pay, equal treatment has set the stage for change. Now more than ever, opportunities in areas like STEM are primed for the entrance of more women. My best advice is to be confident, learn how to network, build your brand and stick to it, and don’t be afraid to put yourself out there.
