Meet Joeferson Gawaran of Cut & Dry Barbershop in Mira Mesa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joeferson Gawaran.

Joeferson, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born in San Diego, CA where my family took residence in the neighborhood of Mira Mesa. Growing up, I watched my Uncle Steve give haircuts to all of the men in the family. By the time I was 13 years old, I was already giving haircuts to myself, my brothers and friends. Starting to work at the age of 16, I worked oddball jobs, fast-food joints, retail and eventually joined the United States Marine Corps. It was only then that I entertained the idea of becoming a licensed Barber and opening up my own shop. After my Honorable Discharge from the Marines, I went to school for my Barber License as well as earning my Associates Degree in Business Management. After earning my Barber License, I worked at Primetime Barbershop in Mira Mesa and began honing my skills as a Barber. After two years of working at Primetime Barbershop, I decided to open Cut & Dry Barbershop in my own neighborhood. I first sought mentorship in the Bay Area from Shane Nesbitt who is regarded as one of the most prolific Barbers of our time. Studying his business and Barbering practices, I became confident to bring that same knowledge of application back to San Diego. It was on January 2, 2016, when I had officially opened the door not just for my business, but also for experiences and opportunities shared with my community.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?During the year leading up to the Grand Opening of Cut & Dry Barbershop, my younger sister, Katlyn, died from Lupus. Is was unequivocally unexpected and was a shock to everyone who knew her. I received the phone call during the middle of a haircut. My brother, Michael, told me that Katlyn died and that I needed to come to the hospital. I finished the haircut and gathered myself to face something I wish had not become a reality. I dealt with extreme depression but had to help my family prepare Katlyn’s funeral. I had used all of my money saved for opening the Barbershop so that my Sister could have the best memorial services possible. By the grace of God, friends and family donated enough money to cover the money I had put up front and more. It would have been wrong of me to take the donated money and use it for my business, so I just accepted that I wasn’t going to open Cut & Dry Barbershop. My Mother and Wife both came to me and offered to give me money to start my Barbershop. I refused at first, but something told me this is just something I had to do. My Wife, Sarah, supported and uplifted me during the year to keep me motivated in opening the shop. She even emptied her whole savings account because she really believes in me. It was at this point, I knew I couldn’t turn back from my future as a Barbershop owner.
