Today we’d like to introduce you to Brijette Pena.

Brijette Peña is the owner and founder of San Diego Seed Company. Her company produces, trials and promotes local and regionally adapted organic seeds for the unique climates of Southern California and the American Southwest. Her company offers over 160 varieties of vegetable herbs and flowers for the home gardener and small-scale farmer. Her work with the Organic Seed Alliance and community farmers focuses on sustainable and regenerative farming. Brijette currently farms on a 1 acre certified organic urban farm in Mt. Hope area of San Diego.

Has it been a smooth road?
NO! The struggle to find land to grow on was very difficult. We are so proud to have found a little homestead in Mt. Hope. We affectionately call it the northwesternmost point of Southeast San Diego. We now have 1 acre of land that is certified organic. This is where is produce seed, trial new varieties and conduct breeding projects.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with San Diego Seed Co. – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
San Diego Seed Company is a seed company that provides organic, locally produced seeds for growers. We specialize in vegetables, herbs, and flowers.

We are proud to be the only seed producers for southern California. Furthermore, we are very proud that we are certified organic and in an urban setting. We believe that urban farmers are the wave of the future. Our campaign “A million urban farmers” (#amillionubranfarmers) has taken off as we work to inspire, educate and support urban farmers of all sizes.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
When we could not find affordable land to buy in other areas of the county, we felt “stuck” but this feeling dissipated quickly as we realized how fortunate we are to live, farm and teach in San Diego City. We love our ability to have direct contact with other urban growers and city dwellers. San Diego is a diverse and beautiful city that is heading in the right direction by supporting local community gardens, back yard chickens and other sustainable practices. I really can’t say anything negative about the city that would not be a common issue in all cities.
