Today we’d like to introduce you to Steve Blake.
Steve, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Born and raised in St. Paul, Minnesota, I grew up playing hockey on the pond in the cold. I had visited San Diego a few times as a kid to see relatives here and knew what a special place it was. Therefore, in 2004 after finishing law school in Minnesota, I transplanted to San Diego and began working at a real estate law firm downtown. After 14 years of practicing real estate law, I started the Blake Law Firm in January 2019 based in Encinitas, where my firm continues to handle real estate related matters, including litigating cases in state and federal court.
I live in Encinitas with my wife and 5-year-old son who is in kindergarten. We are a very active and outdoorsy family, so when I am not being a lawyer, we enjoy walking our dog, running, biking, hiking, camping, skiing/snowboarding, yoga, golf, and pretty much any ocean activity. We are fortunate to live in such a beautiful place that allows us to do most of these things year round.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The practice of law is demanding, complex, unpredictable and often a very stressful occupation, especially when it comes to litigation. These factors combined are notorious for burning out lawyers, and other business people, and may prevent them from providing their clients with the best possible services. Therefore, I pay special attention to both my physical and mental health by getting plenty of exercise, plenty of rest and eating healthy. Additionally, I have created and implemented various policies, processes, and systems at my law firm to help handle the high work workload, which I am constantly revising and tweaking to meet the growing needs of the firm.
Tell us more about the business.
The Blake Law Firm is known as a specialist in handling real estate related legal matters involving commercial and residential properties. We have experience handling matters involving purchase and sale of real estate, leasing, issues involving title to a property, landlord/tenant disputes, neighbor disputes involving easements, encroachments, boundary lines, etc., and numerous other matters affecting real estate.
As a small firm, we take pride in our ability to provide a high level of service to our clients and to ensure that our legal services are tailored to meet each client’s specific objective. Our experience in handling hundreds of real estate legal matters over the years allows us to keep our pricing competitive, even for complex matters.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I consider myself very lucky since my business has grown exponentially in a very short time, but I also believe that luck doesn’t happen by sitting behind your desk all day. I take advantage of opportunities to meet other lawyers, professionals and business people in the community by attending numerous networking and trade events focused on the real estate or legal industry. I also enjoy face to face networking with people over coffee or lunch. These events/meetings often lead to legal work, referrals, education, and/or other opportunities that I would not have discovered had I not made the effort to get out from behind my desk, which is a constant struggle, as any busy attorney can testify to.
