Meet Stephanie Antin of Create Healthy Families

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Antin.

Stephanie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
They say that your journey is a collection of small and big decisions and that pretty much sums up my story. I grew up in Los Angeles, went to Tulane University in New Orleans for college where I studied Communications and Spanish, worked in Madrid, Spain for two years and then planned to travel the world. Unfortunately, the Gulf War broke out and everyone encouraged me to go home.

Within a week, my mother found an ad for a newspaper reporter in Palm Springs so I interviewed and got the job. I met my husband a week later.

For the next 15 years, I worked at different television stations across the country as a producer and executive producer. I won a dozen Emmys and led coverage of the 2003 San Diego wildfires, 9-11 fallout in San Diego and the Danielle Van Dam murder case and trial.

But when my oldest daughter started kindergarten, I made the decision to quit my job so I could have a better work family balance and raise my children.

My children say that’s when I started my second career. I opened My Kids Clubhouse, Inc., indoor play centers for children.

Now, I had a great work family balance, but the play centers took a huge hit during the recession and I closed both of them in 2015.

Now, my children say I’m on my third career. I work from home as a social media strategist and communications specialist focusing on nonprofits, schools and small business. I am also marketing for an eCommerce company and I am a travel blogger.

Has it been a smooth road?
A smooth road? Of course not. I remember when I failed my microeconomics class in college and my advisor told me I couldn’t go to business school and I had no idea what to do. I remember one time I worked 21 days in a row and I was exhausted and I asked the news director for a day off and he told me to quit. I remember waking up night after night during the recession trying to figure out how we were going to make payroll and rent that month.
Struggles build character.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Create Healthy Families – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Right now, I am really proud of the work I’m doing to help nonprofits, schools and small business engage their communities through social media. I feel like those types of businesses are not utilizing social media to build relationships with their members and the community at large. So, I am making it my mission to help them create those relationships which I believe will translate into an increase in donations, membership and membership retention.

I also travel a lot. I believe families should travel and explore different cultures and traditions to expand their perspective. So, I teach families through my blog how they can travel without spending a lot of money.

I also volunteer with Junior Achievement and teach children about financial literacy.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love San Diego. We moved here 20 years ago from Baltimore. We were used to moving every 3 years, but after a few years in San Diego, my husband and I couldn’t come up with anywhere else we wanted to go. We both grew up in Los Angeles and San Diego offers everything we love about Southern California without the traffic, pollution and over population.
