Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna Simanis.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
We started making candles at the beginning of the pandemic when we were spending a lot more time at home than we were used to. I found myself hand-pouring candles and benefiting from the zen-like process. I moved to San Diego from Knoxville, Tennessee about three years ago with my husband and our three cats. From clean, hand-poured candles to simple, handcrafted goods, we began with the idea of making small-batch goods that bring joy to everyday life. We founded Calavera Craft in 2020 in Carlsbad, California and it’s been a whirlwind ever since.
With a career background in design and advertising, I found myself enjoying every aspect of the creative process involved in candle-making and the business behind it. We are now focused on growing the business and introducing new candle scents!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Starting a small business involves a lot of problem-solving. We’ve had to deal with supply shortages like not getting candle jars or wax on time. Being able to pivot and be flexible has been key. We also did our first market event during the holidays and learned a ton. No two days are the same and I love it!
As you know, we’re big fans of Calavera Craft. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Our soy candles are hand-poured in Carlsbad, California. Consciously sourced, each candle is made with sustainable soy wax, pure essential oils or plant-based fragrances, and lead-free cotton wicks for an eco-friendly, clean burn. Started during the pandemic, our curated inventory is meant to change when inspiration strikes. Along with new candle scents, we hope to add other small-batch products this year and attend more markets.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
Our friends, family, and new customers have made all of this possible. Also, big thanks to my husband for letting me make him smell new candle creations multiple times to get his thoughts. He’s also great to bounce ideas back and forth with.
