Today we’d like to introduce you to Rubi Ruvalcaba.
Hi Rubi, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Photography has always been a passion of mine, even before I had a camera in hand. I like to joke that I was a “professional iPhone photographer” because I was always the hype girl with the phone out ready to make you pose for photos. i was always encouraged to pursue photography but as a naturally introverted and perfectionist person, the idea of putting myself out there to photograph strangers was very intimidating. Everything changed last year when I decided to pick up a camera, I started taking photos of my babies and around Christmas time, friends and family were reaching out asking for help with Christmas card photos. I was hesitant at first and made it clear I was not a professional, but I agreed. I fell in love with the confidence and joy I saw in people when they saw themselves through my lens. The following months were spent offering free sessions to family and friends, talking to fellow photographers, learning as much as I could and contemplating making the jump. Before I knew it, word of mouth spread and I was regularly booked. By the end of February I decided to launch an instagram page and start showcasing my work, which led me to connecting with so many incredible people. While I’m still learning and growing in this craft, I truly love what I and often find myself wondering why I didn’t start sooner.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting my photography business has been an incredible journey, but it has not been a smooth road. One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced so far has been balancing being a mom and a business owner. Mom guilt is real- there are days where I struggle with being away from my babies for shoots or when work demands my attention. It’s hard to fully step away and fully dive into growing my business without feeling like I’m missing out on family time or not giving my babies the attention they deserve. At the same time, being a mom has been my greatest motivation. It has pushed me to work hard to establish a successful business and I’ve learned to give myself grace and trust that I am setting a good example for them by pursuing my passion.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I love documenting little moments, big ones and everything in between. what I believe sets me apart is my ability to create a relaxed and intimate atmosphere that allows my clients to be their authentic selves. I don’t just provide beautiful photos; I make sure my clients have an unforgettable experience. I encourage clients to let go of the idea of the “perfect” photo and instead focus on being present, embracing the love and connection allowing me to capture candid, heartfelt moments that truly reflect their personalities and relationships.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
oh absolutely, I don’t think I would be able to be where I am without a good support system. My husband has been my biggest supporter. from the very beginning, he’s believed in me and my dreams, even when I wasn’t sure where this journey would take me. I’m incredibly grateful for his constant praise and encouragement.
I have also connected with some amazing photographers who have been extremely kind in helping me learn and navigate starting a photography business. A few honorable mentions: Olivia, from Olivia Marie photography. She has been so encouraging, taking time to give advise, answer questions and allow me to tag along to shoots. Savanah, from Savanah pool photography. she was one of the first people I reached out to on instragram and she has been there ever since. I slid in her DM’s on a Friday night and she invited me to tag along and watch her work the very next day! she looked over my photos, gave me feedback and recommendations on what gear I should look at if I was going to jump into the world of photography. All I can say is the photography community ive connected with is unmatched!
