Today we’d like to introduce you to Sherry Kalish
Hi Sherry, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I have always loved connecting with others and learning about the profound depths of someone’s life story. This passion of connection has been a trait I have naturally carried with me throughout my life, and it ultimately guided me to pursue a fulfilling career as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. From a young age, I knew that I loved helping others; however, I did not immediately know what specific career path would truly feel right for me. I initially began by studying nursing, but then transferred to studying elementary education. Finally, I made one last significant shift to the field of clinical psychology. It was during this pivotal time that I experienced an enlightening “aha” realization, understanding that this was indeed the best path for me. Additionally, I have faced my own mental health challenges throughout life, which have further influenced and inspired my chosen journey in this rewarding career. I began my journey as a school-based therapist, then worked at multiple private practices, where I gained invaluable experience and honed my skills before finally opening my own private practice at the start of 2024.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Becoming a therapist has not been the smoothest road; in fact, it has been quite a challenging journey. During the time of this pursuit, I welcomed 2 babies into the world. I became pregnant with my first baby during my final year of my master’s degree in clinical psychology, which added an additional layer of complexity to my studies. This was all occurring during the pandemic, a time marked by uncertainty. It was a tough time filled with all of the unknowns that were happening around me, including the anxiety that can accompany both the experience of pregnancy and living through a pandemic.
I began my work as a therapist while trying to balance the demanding responsibilities of motherhood and starting my professional career. This dual focus was a lot to navigate, as I was balancing two very important and yet entirely new worlds in my life. This period has been one where I feel that I built upon my resilience and drive in ways I never expected. I learned many significant things about myself during this time of change and self-discovery.
Then, while I was pregnant with my second baby, I was also in the process of finishing my required 3,000 clinical hours to become a fully licensed therapist. This was a particularly stressful time, as I had a specific goal of wanting to become fully licensed before my second baby was born. I am pleased to say I achieved that goal by taking my licensing exam and passing it just a week before she made her entrance into the world, when I was 38 weeks pregnant! About 2 months after giving birth, I was determined to start setting up my own private practice. This endeavor took a considerable amount of time and balance to achieve successfully. Opening my practice while also navigating the transition of expanding my family has helped me see my strength both personally and professionally. I am incredibly grateful that I took this big leap, which ultimately led me to turning my dream into reality of having my own private practice, and now we are one year into this transformative journey!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
As a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, I specialize in providing support and guidance to women who are navigating the various phases of motherhood, including challenges associated with infertility, pregnancy, and the postpartum period. In addition, I work with parents individually or couples who are experiencing relationship difficulties, particularly in areas related to communication, achieving balance, and adapting to the complexities of parenthood. I also have accumulated extensive experience in offering support to neurodivergent individuals, including those diagnosed with Autism, ADHD, learning disabilities, and other similar challenges. My specialization also includes working with individuals as they navigate their experiences with late diagnoses or their self-identification within the neurodivergent community. I take pride in supporting many hardworking clients who are truly committed to their inner work and healing. It is both a privilege and an honor for me to be involved in my clients’ personal journeys toward growth and understanding. I offer in-person therapy sessions in Del Mar, California, and I also provide virtual therapy services that are accessible across all regions of California.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
I do not have a specific memory, but my favorite chapter of childhood was when I was running track and field during both middle and high school, which led me to competing competitively in college. This period was a particularly transformative time of my life; it greatly helped with building my self confidence which was a big weakness throughout my childhood. I also formed some of the best friendships that I continue to cherish to this day. During those years, I created countless core memories that have significantly shaped who I am and how I approach challenges in my life.
