Rising Stars: Meet Sarah Poyourow of Poway

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Poyourow.

Hi Sarah, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Feral Rose Floral started during a time when I was craving something creative and personal. As my son got older, I found myself wanting to reconnect with who I was beyond being a mom. With a background as a mental health therapist, so I’ve always been drawn to emotion, intention, and beauty—but I wanted to explore those things in a more hands-on, expressive way.

I signed up for a floral design class on a whim, and something just clicked. It felt intuitive and grounding—like I had found this whole new language to work with. The name Feral Rose came to me early on—it captured that perfect tension of softness and edge, which felt like the kind of beauty I wanted to bring into my work.

From there, I started doing small events, slowly building my skills, my voice, and eventually a business. Now, Feral Rose is known for florals that feel romantic, organic, and full of emotion. My favorite part of the process is listening closely to each couple and turning their story into something fleeting and beautiful—something that just feels like them.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not always! One of the biggest challenges in the beginning was finding my voice—and learning to trust it. When you’re starting out, it’s easy to get caught up in trends or feel like you need to design a certain way to be taken seriously. But over time, I realized the more I leaned into what felt honest to me, the more everything started to fall into place.

Building a clear style and vision took a lot of trial and error—saying no to things that didn’t align, and letting go of the pressure to please everyone. It’s been just as much about growing into myself as a designer as it has been about growing a business.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I design florals inspired by nature—organic, textural, and full of feeling. I love movement, unexpected color pairings, and anything that feels like it just belongs in the space—naturally and emotionally.

My background as a therapist really informs how I design. I listen carefully—not just to what people say, but also to what they don’t—and I translate all of that into flowers that feel like them. Nothing cookie-cutter. No Pinterest repeats.

What I’m most proud of is creating a brand that doesn’t chase trends. For me, flowers aren’t just decoration—they’re a feeling. And I want people to walk into a room and feel something. Something a little unexpected, a little wild… a little bit feral. That’s where the magic is.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
There’s definitely been some luck—but it usually shows up quietly. The right clients finding me at the right time, vendors who just get it, and opportunities I didn’t even know to look for. But I’ve also learned that luck only takes you so far—you have to be ready for it, or at least willing to run with it when it shows up.

Even the tougher moments—the off-fit clients or the events that didn’t go quite as planned—taught me a lot. They helped shape my style and sharpen my vision. I wouldn’t call it bad luck, just part of the process.

So yes, there’s been luck. But there’s also been a lot of gut instinct, slow growth, and trusting that the right people will find me. And honestly, that part has felt kind of magical.
