Community Highlights: Meet James Knight of Gentle Somatic Yoga® and Somatic Wellness™

Today we’d like to introduce you to James Knight.

Hi James, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
It’s fascinating to see how the word “somatics” has become such a buzzword in today’s wellness world — in fact, “somatic yoga” is now the most searched yoga style on the internet. When I began my career nearly 40 years ago, hardly anyone knew the term. Somatics, coined by Thomas Hanna in the 1960s, means experiencing the body from within — a firsthand awareness of self through felt sensation. I was among the early pioneers to bridge Somatics and Yoga in the 1990s, trained and certified through the Novato Institute for Somatic Research and Training, and mentored by Hanna’s wife, Eleanor Criswell Hanna. Around that time, I taught Somatic Yoga as an upper-division psychology course at Sonoma State University, helping students explore the mind-body connection long before the field of somatics gained widespread recognition.

As my background expanded into body-oriented psychotherapy, various modalities of bodywork, and yoga, I developed a therapeutic movement method called Gentle Somatic Yoga® (GSY) — a restorative practice based on pandiculation, which retrains and strengthens the brain-to-muscle connection rather than focusing on stretching. GSY empowers people to self-regulate and release deeply held stress patterns that contribute to pain, stiffness, and postural imbalance. What began as a quiet exploration of the body’s inner wisdom has blossomed into a global movement for self-healing, mindfulness, and conscious living.

Gentle Somatic Yoga® has helped thousands of people worldwide manage or reverse chronic pain and mobility challenges, supporting conditions such as:

• Chronic lower-back pain and sciatica

• Neck, shoulder, and joint tension

• Headaches and migraines

• TMJ (jaw tightness)

• Arthritis and fibromyalgia

• Muscle spasms and chronic tightness

• Poor posture and spinal misalignment

• Knee, hip, and joint stiffness

• Carpal tunnel and repetitive strain

• Scoliosis and spinal curvature

• Stress, anxiety, and trauma recovery

• Multiple sclerosis (MS) and Parkinson’s disease

• Balance issues and fall prevention

Today, I teach internationally — offering professional trainings, immersive Somatic Wellness and Adventure Retreats™, and workshops both in person and online. My audience include yoga teachers, yoga therapists, bodyworkers, healthcare professionals, and anyone seeking to reclaim ease, mobility, and aging gracefully.

I live in Tucson right now but spend quite a bit of time in San Diego with clients and students, because that is where Gentle Somatic Yoga was created, and I have a large client base there. For more information about Gentle Somatic Yoga visit my website https://www.gentlesomaticyoga.com.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I feel incredibly fortunate. I began my journey in the healing arts at 20 years old, and now, four decades later, I’m still as passionate as ever about helping people reconnect to their bodies and their inner wisdom. Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of studying with some of the leading teachers in the fields of yoga, somatics, and integrative therapy. I’ve always lived by the motto “follow the yes current”—trusting intuition and saying yes when life invites me to grow or share my gifts. Interestingly, I never set out to create my own method of yoga or movement; Gentle Somatic Yoga® emerged organically from the experiences, teachings, and people who inspired me along the way.

My greatest challenge has been managing the administrative and operational aspects of running a growing global organization. Technology evolves quickly, and balancing creative work with business logistics can be difficult. I’m at my best when I’m teaching, creating new content, and connecting directly with people. Still, these challenges have taught me the importance of collaboration, trust, and inviting the students I’ve trained to help carry the vision forward.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Gentle Somatic Yoga® and Somatic Wellness™?
Gentle Somatic Yoga® is both a school and a lifestyle that inspires healthy aging, mindful movement, and whole-self wellbeing. At its core, it’s an educational program offering a 100-hour training curriculum, often taken as continuing education by yoga teachers, yoga therapists, and other health-care professionals. The method blends evidence-based neuroscience, mindfulness, and restorative movement to help people experience greater freedom, mobility, and embodied awareness. What sets Gentle Somatic Yoga apart is its emphasis on pandiculation—a neuromuscular technique that re-educates the brain-to-muscle connection rather than relying on stretching. This empowers students and clients to become their own best healers through safe, gentle, and accessible movement.

Another branch of my work is Somatic Wellness™, which expands beyond movement into a holistic way of living. It integrates body, mind, and spirit through collaboration with experts in complementary disciplines such as mediation, Pilates, Qigong, Tai Chi, and Nada Yoga. These immersive experiences often include art, music, sound healing, cacao ceremonies, sweat lodges, and other self-care practices that awaken joy and connection.

What I’m most proud of—brand-wise—is how both branches of my work share a single intention: to build conscious global community. Whether through professional trainings, retreats, or online offerings, my goal is to empower people to live with greater ease, presence, and authenticity—both on and off the mat.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I’m passionate about the potential we all have as human beings. If there’s one thing I’d like readers to take away, it’s that healing and growth are possible at any age. Gentle Somatic Yoga® and Somatic Wellness™ were born from decades of teaching and working one-on-one with students and clients—experiences that revealed how profoundly the body holds innate wisdom and the capacity to self-heal when we learn to listen and respond with mindfulness. Whether you’re a teacher, therapist, or someone simply wanting to feel more comfortable in your body, these practices remind us that ease and vitality are part of our true nature. My hope is that more people discover the power of slowing down, tuning in, and moving from the inside out—because that’s where true freedom begins.
