Meet David Jenkins of Fizzique in Carlsbad

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Jenkins.

David, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I grew up Edinburgh, Scotland. Having attended the University of Edinburgh where I earned my BSc in chemical engineering. I am a 3-time Olympian, have competed in the 72, 76 and 80 summer games in track & field, winning a silver medal in the 72 Munich games.

Since 1988, my passion and focus in business have been driven by a self-described insatiable zeal for protein. I am a serial entrepreneur, inventor, and innovator who has created and built multiple business and products around protein solutions.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
When looking back at the last several decades of business, some of the greatest obstacles or challenges I’ve faced have also come from the greatest source of my inspiration. As an immigrant to this country, I am able to recognize the amazing advantages that are afforded to those who choose to create and build a business here. There is an element of luck or timing when it comes to success and I was fortunate to have built my first company during a time of very favorable economic conditions for business.

Finding great people to be part of your team, those who you can truly trust and rely upon is incredibly difficult. Over time, this has proven to become even more of a challenge. I’ve watched a slow cultural shift as to what is and is not acceptable in the workplace as it relates to work ethic and trust … and, this has made the challenge of finding top talent with the same moral compass and alignment more of a challenge.

Having said that, I still have that same fire today that I had when I started my first project all those years ago, back when I was completely self-funded. And while the business climate is not as favorable, I am incredibly excited for what we are building at Fizzique.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Fizzique, LLC story. Tell us more about the business.
I’ve always looked at the business with this “blue-ocean” mindset. I always wanted to be the disruptor.

Over the last 30 years, I’ve continually leveraged my chemical engineering background with that vision to create a new product in the protein marketplace.

I first started with whey protein and instantizing protein powder. Then, I looked to see how we could create bars that could go mainstream by creating a triple-layer product that tasted great.

I realized that the key for business success over the long run was going to be for us to own the IP and create a real barrier to entry for others in what was truly becoming a commodity play… that being energy drinks. For quite some time, these were premium priced products, which could demand price based on some type of unique offering – yet today they are sold most anywhere at price parody.

I knew that by applying a scientific approach, I could change the game.  I also knew that I wanted to do something more. I wanted it to be about an experience. At Fizzique – we want to delight health-conscious consumers every day with our products. We are providing delicious, refreshing sparkling water with protein benefits!
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
As I mentioned previously, I believe that part of success is tied to good fortune or luck. I was incredibly fortunate relative to the timing of my birth. I grew up as the petrochemical industry was coming into its prominence in Europe and worldwide. My father was an engineer who quickly moved up the ranks, affording our family exceptional socio-economic opportunities. I was exposed to and enrolled in the best academic programs in Scotland. With this lifestyle also came trade-offs in terms of expectations, discipline, and structure. Life had one focus: study – sports – repeat. Today I remain very disciplined, very focused, and very acutely aware of both what I have been afforded and what my responsibilities are as a result of that good fortune.

And I am so fortunate to be working with such outstanding colleagues as we together, bring fizzique Sparkling Protein Water to the world.
