Check Out Armani Lawrence’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Armani Lawrence.

Hi Armani, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born into a hearing family. At age 3, I developed spinal meningitis. I grew up in a mainstream school, not knowing much sign language until I discovered ASL. 12 years ago, I worked my way up in the kitchen after a series of different jobs (jack-of-all-trades). I fell in love with cooking. While I am not working, I love being involved with Deaf Queer Resource Center.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I faced language challenges in the hearing world as I explored my culture. I constantly navigated between the Deaf and hearing worlds, deepening my understanding of myself. Lacking a strong role model in my family, I dedicated myself to personal growth. I followed my passion for cooking despite the difficulties. I learned to interpret social cues and communicate effectively in their language, mastering balance along the way.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I work in the kitchen of a high-end restaurant as part of the prep crew. Being Deaf, I actively seek ways to improve my cooking skills. It’s uncommon for Deaf individuals to be in a predominantly hearing kitchen. I also manage ADHD and Bipolar, which have fostered greater compassion—enabling me to develop creative solutions and communicate with empathy.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
I would say self-love. My childhood was difficult, and I had to learn to love myself when others couldn’t.
