Community Highlights: Meet Dr. Colton Korne of Functional Performance Institute – Chiropractic & Sports Medicine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Colton Korne.

Hi Dr. Korne, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
My story begins growing up as a very active kid involved in a variety of sports including motocross, skateboarding, and many others; which of course involved dealing with injuries. Despite this, I always hated going to the doctor, as I didn’t like pills and doctor’s offices just gave me a bad feeling. It wasn’t until I discovered chiropractic that I found out about holistic care and a natural approach to injury recovery, rather than just resting, icing, and taking some medicine. I graduated from Cal State University, Northridge with Honors before pursuing a Doctorate from Southern California University of Health Sciences, where I graduated Magna Cum Laude with my Doctorate of Chiropractic (DC) in 2019. From there, I had the opportunity to work as a Chiropractor in the Integrated Sports Medicine Department of the Mamba Sports Academy in Los Angeles, owned by the late Kobe Bryant. There I had the opportunity to work with a high-level team of healthcare providers who were on the cutting edge of sports medicine and injury recovery. After gaining incredible insight and clinical skills, I decided to take my experience to San Diego where I founded Functional Performance Institute in 2020. Here I have applied many of the principles of Evidence-Based, Patient-Centered Care with an emphasis on getting the most Effective and Efficient Results that I can for my patients.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Like many other businesses, the pandemic was definitely a challenge. I pivoted to a hybrid model of in-person and Telehealthcare to help serve my patients, as well as comply with all of the rapidly changing public health measures. On top of that, I was in a brand-new city with very few people that I knew. My profession is very personal, as I am literally putting my hands on people every day, as well as learning about intimate details of their health. Therefore, it really is a business of trust and respect, which can often take time to develop.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Functional Performance Institute – Chiropractic & Sports Medicine?
We are a Sports Chiropractic office who has taken a different approach from standard medicine, and even most other chiropractic offices out there. We specialize in taking an active approach to your care, focusing on Time-Based Service so you actually spend time with your doctor and not feel rushed through a quick 5-minute adjustment where you feel like you’re part of a mill or on a conveyor belt in a doctor’s office. This is how we do it:

To start, our initial goal is to really understand 3 Important Factors:

What is your concern/what is at the root cause of this problem?

How is this affecting your life?

What are your goals/what do you want to accomplish through care in our office?

From there, we build out a plan for your care based on your condition and your needs. Then we execute that plan with you so we can get you back doing the things you love most in life.

We do this utilizing a variety of different treatment modalities, including:

– Full Body Chiropractic Adjustments (Spine, Extremities, Y-Strap Adjustment, etc.) to decrease joint pain/stiffness and improve joint motion

– Focused Deep Tissue and Active Release Massage Techniques to decrease muscle tension/increase mobility

– Other Modalities, including: Cupping, Sports Taping, IASTM (Scraping Techniques/”Graston”), etc.

– Corrective Exercise/Rehab to increase strength/stability and create lasting results

We are proud to say that we will always:

– Take the time to listen to you

– Educate you on why it may have happened and what we’re going to do about it

– Give you long-term strategies and solutions on how to manage the problem moving forward

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Risk-Taking is very unique in my practice, as healthcare deals heavily with risk management and risk vs. reward of treatments. However, I am proud to say that Chiropractic is one of the safest forms of healthcare that exists. There is always risk when working with people and their spines, but a detailed history and thorough examination will screen out those risks. Honestly, my biggest risk was moving down to this city and opening up a brand-new practice. However, I truly believe in myself and my practice and what I can do for people, and that has been the guiding light for my success thus far.
