Today we’d like to introduce you to Hallee Bathard
Hi Hallee, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always dreamed of opening a flower shop. In my early 20s, I started creating floral arrangements for friends, family, and various events, and this hobby gradually became a passion. Seeing the joy on people’s faces made my dream even more appealing.
Earlier this year, I was unexpectedly let go from what I thought was my dream job. Instead of rushing into another role, I reflected on what I truly enjoyed about my previous job: creativity, social interaction, and philanthropy. I realized these elements were essential in my next career step.
During this pivotal moment, I decided not to wait any longer to pursue what I loved. Why wait to find fulfillment in your career?
While the concept of a flower truck or floral bar isn’t new, my goal is to enrich our community, one flower at a time. After all, who doesn’t love flowers? A classic truck has character and imperfections, just like flowers that grow.
I had my first pop-up on Mother’s Day and the community support and feedback was unreal. It was a great way to start getting my name out there! Currently, I’m developing various services to offer, including delivery subscriptions and event arrangements.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting a business meant shedding my limiting beliefs. I constantly remind myself that everyone starts somewhere, and perfection isn’t necessary. There are always going to be challenges, like obtaining resources and securing finances.
Thankfully, my community has been an incredible support system. I reached out to talented friends—photographers, graphic designers, and website creators—who generously offered their skills. I contacted the owners of my favorite coffee shop, Coffee Coffee in Leucadia, and they welcomed me for a pop-up event.
To test my concept before investing in my own classic truck, I borrowed my brother’s 1970 Ford Ranger. My friends joined me at my first pop-up to help with customers, and thank goodness they did! We sold out in just two hours. Thanks to my amazing network, the journey to starting Hal’s Flower Truck has been remarkably smooth. The hardest part was taking the leap and turning it into action.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
At Hal’s Flower Truck, we believe that flowers bring joy, beauty, and a touch of nature into our lives. Our offerings are more than just bouquets—they are experiences that connect people to the earth and each other. We provide a unique and immersive floral experience with our BYOB (Build Your Own Bouquet) service, allowing you to craft personalized bouquets beside our classic truck. This hands-on approach encourages creativity, supports local flower growers, and meaningfully engages our community.
We specialize in sourcing seasonal and local flowers from flower farmers in Encinitas, supporting our community and reducing our carbon footprint. What sets us apart is our dedication to sustainability and community engagement. Every aspect of our business, from flower sourcing to packaging, is designed with sustainability in mind. Giving back to the community is a core value at Hal’s Flower Truck, and we plan to regularly partner with local charities and organizations, directing a portion of our proceeds to support various causes. Whether through donations or events, we strive to make a positive impact.
Beyond our BYOB service at pop-up events in Encinitas, we are soon launching a delivery subscription and booking platform for custom floral arrangements for events, weddings, and special occasions. We have many more exciting ideas in the works and cannot wait to share them with you!
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I love connecting with others and supporting local businesses and events! The Encinitas community is truly one-of-a-kind, making it easy to network just by caring about where I live. Attending local events always presents an opportunity to meet someone new, even in our small town.
My biggest tip for networking is to be bold, whether in person or online. Don’t be afraid to ask questions when you’re starting out. Reach out to a variety of people; the right connections will naturally fall into place. Believing in the power of what’s meant to be is crucial, and it’s important to define what your version of community looks like.
Social media is a useful tool in this process. While many direct messages may go unanswered, some lead to productive meetings over coffee, mentorship opportunities, or video calls with people across the country. I am a strong believer that being resilient and open will yield positive outcomes.
