Community Highlights: Meet Rosa Flores of Sayulitas Mexican Food

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rosa Flores

Hi Rosa, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My husband and I got the idea of starting a taco shop business when we visited Sayulita Beach in Nayarit, Mexico which is next to Puerto Vallarta where my family originated from. We met an American who was selling tacos near the beach. With our previous work experience in business management and me running my mom’s taco shops when I was a teenager, we decided to take a risk and open Sayulitas Mexican food.

Our first location was in 2015 in Mira Mesa. We started with a traditional Mexican taco shop menu but we wanted to be different. We are a family of mixed cultures; I’m Latina and my husband is Filipino/Mexican. We decided to infuse Spam and Filipino meats like Loganisa, Tocino to our Specialty Burritos and Fries, also added unique menu items like the Hot Cheeto Burrito, Pacman fries and Lumpiaquesa Burrito. This hit especially on social media and the rest is history.

During these past almost 10 years we’ve grown to 8 locations, 7 in San Diego and 1 on the Las Vegas strip. It’s been an fulfilling ride to this point but I can’t emphasize enough how our previous work experience played a vital role in making Sayulitas what it is today. A lot of long hours, consistency and hard work.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
For us, it’s never a smooth road in business. There are always challenges and obstacles. Alot of times you’re putting out fires’ day to day and at the same time trying to achieve your short term and long term goals.

We’ve had our struggles as it is a family business, but direct communication is key and in the end we are a cohesive family team. We are all on the same page to achieve our goals.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Again, we are a family run business, our slogans are “Mexican Food with a Filipino Twist” and “The Home of the Big Ass Burrito”. These slogans describe the type of food we serve. We are a unique taco shop and serve huge quantities of food. Some of our menu items can feed up to 2-4 people (Family Meals). We recognize it’s not easy money wise living in San Diego and or California in general. We give you your “bang for your buck”. We are known to have “The Biggest Burrito on the Las Vegas Strip.”

We are definitely proud of our business we created. With the support of family, friends, former co-workers, business associates, vendors, employees, communities and always our loyal customers, we wouldn’t have grown to where we are today. My husband and I came from humble beginnings, we worked our butts off in different industries, saved money and ultimately took the risk of starting a small business. We always encourage others, if we can do it, you can! Hard work, consistency and a positive mindset.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
We love San Diego, this is our home and will be until we cant afford it lol. Also, we love the proximity to Mexico where my roots are.

Dislikes, would be the rising costs of everything, this is why we serve huge portions of freshly made food and do our best to support the communities we are in through fundraisers and sponsorships.

In ending, we would like to Thank our loyal customers. We are very appreciative and grateful for everyone’s continued support!
