Today we’d like to introduce you to Jorge Martinez.
Hi Jorge, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
The Killing Floors got started because we all shared a love for 60’s music and raw, honest rock and roll. We just wanted to make something real, not something polished or calculated. At first, it was just a few of us jamming late into the night, figuring out what clicked. Pretty quickly we realized we were all drawn to the same sounds: garage rock, psych, blues, and the rhythms of 60’s and 70’s records that just felt alive.
We’re a Chicano rock and roll band at heart, and our songs naturally bounce between Spanish and English. Over time, other languages snuck in too. Each member comes from a different musical background, and the music we’re creating now carries the different hues of our collective lineage as well as our individual identities, reflecting who we are, where we come from, and the histories that live inside the sound.
From the very beginning, everything was DIY. We wrote, recorded, and learned as we went, trusting our instincts. We did everything ourselves, from the recordings to the merch to even tailoring our own clothes, trying to capture the same authenticity as the bands we loved. Playing shows was just as important as writing songs. Being in front of an audience taught us what worked and what didn’t.
Over time, the band got more intentional, but we never lost that raw edge. Getting to where we are now has been about staying consistent, collaborating, and being honest with ourselves. The story’s still unfolding, but the focus has always been the same, making music that’s meaningful, full of feeling, and true to who we are.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Has it been a smooth road? Not at all. We live in Los Angeles, which is often considered the epicenter of music and art in the USA, so the competition can be fierce. However, there are so many incredible bands here, that at the same time, can be a supportive community if you find your people. In a city this big, it can be hard to stand out, and identity becomes a challenge for many musicians. Staying true to who you are and the art you’re making is what keeps us grounded.
We all grew up in the poor barrios of LA, where the roads were literally and figuratively rough. That’s part of what shaped us. It gave us tough skin and the ability to navigate the challenges of show business, which can be brutal for any artist. It also gave us a deep appreciation for what it means to build something from nothing.
We’ve also faced personal heartbreak. Losing our original bassist, German Cruz, was devastating and took a big toll on all of us. We keep him in our hearts and honor his memory through our music, and he continues to inspire the way we create together.
Looking back, we’re proud of where we come from and how far we’ve come. Growing up with very little taught us resilience, growth, and dedication, Lessons that show up in our music and in the way we approach life as a band. Even with the struggles, the journey has made our connection to each other and to our music stronger than we could have imagined.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We are a 60’s-influenced Chicano band that plays original music in both Spanish and English. We’re known for our electrifying stage presence, which relies on spontaneity and feeling. Our music captures the spirit of the 60’s while adding a modern touch, creating a sound that feels both familiar and fresh at the same time.
We’re most proud of taking the challenges of our environment, our community, and personal loss and turning them into music that’s meaningful and full of feeling. That dedication has allowed us to share the stage with some incredible bands and perform on some big stages.
What sets us apart is that, like the word Chicano itself, we exist between worlds as we’re neither from here nor there, but somehow we’ve managed to bring the here and there together into the now, ultimately blending cultures, influences, and experiences into something uniquely our own.
Any big plans?
This year is shaping up to be an exciting chapter for The Killing Floors. We have tours that are being planned for both domestic and international, and we can’t wait to bring our music to new cities and connect with people in different communities.
We’re also releasing new merch we’ve poured a lot of love into, collaborating with some of our favorite artists to bring it to life. Our first full-length album drops in a few months, with singles lined up throughout the year, and we’re already working on our second album.
On top of that, we’ve teamed up with incredible talent as we are collaborating to create a few music videos that capture the spirit of our songs. We’re thrilled to share all this new music, energy, and creativity with the world and, of course, continue growing as a band and as individuals.
