Daily Inspiration: Meet Maritza Sandoval

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maritza Sandoval.

Hi Maritza, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
As a young teen mom (14 years old), I struggled a lot, especially when it came to financial stability. We were homeless, couch surfing, and could barely afford things on my income alone. Fast forward 11 years later, and here we are, making it happen. Some days I couldn’t do it, and other days I knew I had no choice but to make it happen for my son. For a long time, I was not sure what I wanted to do with my life as my whole life consisted of taking care of a child while still figuring out who I, myself, was. I started off doing cosmetology in high school, to fashion design in college, to bartending, to then doing business in college, to now doing PMU. I love what I do, and I know I can only get better! Each day I try not to get discouraged and think positive. They say starting off a business is the hardest part so here I am doing the hardest step to beginning my business. I began my business because I knew I needed some type of stability in my career. I needed a real future for my son and I. I saw online how you could be a PMU artist and jumped on my first class. I truly, genuinely enjoyed doing Ombré brows and continued to do so after I completed the class. I got my certificates and licenses that was needed, but the hardest step is putting my name out there and getting in clients. I made an Instagram page, BeautifyMeByMari, and Facebook, and even business cards. As of today, I’m taking in clients and hoping for the best with more clientele. I’m also working towards opening up my own studio spot and hopefully transitioning to doing it full-time. I know it’s one step at a time, but we have made it this far, and there’s no point of giving up now!

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s not been smooth at all. I continued feeling like I was doing the runarounds. I couldn’t start taking in clients after my class because I needed to have the proper paperwork and certificates. I needed money to buy supplies, the chair, or even rent out a space to work from. I needed money to do those things, but I couldn’t get money unless I started working. Felt like a huge run around like I needed one thing in order to do the other but in order to get that thing I need to do the other thing. It was very difficult, but I’ve made it this far, and any other struggle that comes along, I will overcome.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize on ombré brows. It’s an eyebrow tattoo that once heals looks more natural giving you natural looking brows. For those who hardly have any eyebrows and hair is no longer being grown. For those who want to wake up without having to do their brows before leaving the house. Any reason is a really good reason to get your brows done. I take almost 3 hours to get ready, but since getting my brows done it takes me a lot less time.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Definitely use any or every type of social media platform. Make sure you research who your instructor is, if they’re legit and if they’re good.
