Exploring Life & Business with Rebecca Secord of Your Home Legal, APC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Secord.

Rebecca Secord

Hi Rebecca, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My path hasn’t been a straight line, far from it. As a practicing attorney in real estate and estate planning, I never dreamed this is what I would be doing.

I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, the oldest of four girls and daughter to a plumber and hospital secretary. From a young age, I always knew I wanted to be a lawyer, it started with people telling me I was going to be one (I asked a million and one questions and always loved sparring with people about any topic). But I didn’t know what that really meant…being a lawyer. As I grew up I thought I wanted to be a family law attorney, representing fathers in their divorces – I wanted to be in a courtroom fighting for them and their kids.

Launching into adulthood started with 9/11 my senior year of high school and ended with the financial crash of 2008 during my my final year of law school. I spent the first couple of years after law school in Washington, D.C. working on big litigation in a supporting role, deep in the background. It was a means to an end, but I was missing something.

And then everything changed in one phone call. A friend from law school reached out and said she was going on maternity leave and needed someone to “do real estate closings.” She may as well have been speaking another language. I cried through property class in law school. This was the exact opposite of what I envisioned my career to be but I needed a change and it sounded interesting. And boy was it!

Real estate closings on the East Coast are VERY different than what you see in California. The unexpected adventures that came from this one phone call changed the trajectory of my career and my life. I realized pretty quickly how much I actually loved real estate.

I loved the people, I loved trying to figure out tricky problems with the title, or the issues that came up during the closing process. The rest is history. I ended up taking over this part of the practice of the firm I was at until my family relocated to San Diego in 2017.

Moving to San Diego gave me a fresh start, both personally and professionally. It’s where I came out and committed to living authentically. That journey reinforced my belief that the law should meet people where they are, whether they’re a traditional family, a blended household, or with chosen family .That’s the lens I bring to to my work at Your Home Legal.

When I came to San Diego, I started working for a local escrow company and found out that California does things a whole lot differently. From the way contracts are handled, to the people involved, and everything in between. I sat in a unique position where I was an attorney, but not an attorney in California (yet!), and could not actually answer or help the buyers and sellers involved. I recognized a HUGE hole in the escrow process for buyers and sellers.

They have great teams – real estate agents, lenders, insurance brokers, title & escrow folk, but what was missing from this picture was their legal guide. Buying real estate is, for most people, the most expensive thing they will ever do – and not just the act of buying it. The real estate and the consequences of owning real estate have long-lasting financial consequences and without proper advice and guidance can have dire consequences.

And that’s how Your Home Legal started: by recognizing a need to support buyers and sellers during their escrow process, helping them understand the risks while they’re in it, as well as answer the question “great – we just bought this house, now what?!” For me, the “now what” almost always leads to estate planning. Real estate and estate planning go hand in hand, especially in California where probate is expensive, time-consuming and almost entirely avoidable with the right planning. Helping clients protect their homes and families on both sides of the equation is at the core of what I do.

Looking back, what’s kept me grounded through all the twists and turns, is the people. It’s the families I serve, the communities I’m part of, and the chance to make something that’s often intimidating feel human and management. That’s the heart of Your Home Legal, and what keeps me excited to do this work every day.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I don’t know a single person, especially a business owner, who has had a smooth road in their career or business. The last nearly 20 years have been some of the most challenging times personally and professionally.

One of my biggest struggles was networking. For nearly a decade, I avoided it altogether. The idea of introducing myself, talking about what I do, or asking for what I needed was terrifying. My fear of networking limited my opportunities, the people I could help, and even my own self-discovery.

In 2019, I joined the California Bar, nine short months before COVID shut everything down. At the time, I was new to San Diego and a stranger in the local legal community. When the world stopped, I realized I had no choice but to push past my fears. To support my firm and grow, I had to show up. I joined a local law firm near the end of 2019 and was a relative stranger to the San Diego legal community.

Strangely enough, COVID became the turning point. It forced me to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. And in the process, I discovered that not only do I enjoy networking, but I’m really good at it. Over the last five years, I’ve turned what once felt like my biggest weakness into a genuine superpower: connecting the right people at the right time.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Your Home Legal is a law firm that focuses on real estate and estate planning. We step into the exact gaps most people don’t realize exist.

We focus on supporting buyers and sellers in the purchase/sale process understand the actual legal consequences of what they’re doing in the short and long term. Whether that’s reviewing purchase agreements or preparing seller disclosures (psst – this is an absolute land mine for buyer and sellers and where nearly all of the disputes originate in residential real estate), we’re helping fill the void where your real estate agent, lender and escrow/title teams can’t actually advise you. But our work doesn’t stop when escrow closes. Real estate and estate planning go hand in hand – your home isn’t just a transaction, it’s often the largest asset. Without the right estate plan in place, everything you’ve worked hard for can be at risk. We’re also deeply connected to the LGBTQIA+ community which means inclusivity and our chosen families are built into how we approach every plan.

What sets us apart? The way we work. We’re approachable, practical, and people-first. We make complicated or seemingly difficult processes easier to understand so our clients walk away confident and protected. We also help our clients build out their team of advisors because what you do in one area affects everything else. From financial advisors, CPAs, insurance brokers and other attorneys, our goal is to make sure you’ve got the best team working to make your life that much better.

Brand-wise, I’m proud that Your Home Legal feels human. We’re known for being thorough, but also creating a space where clients feel comfortable asking questions, getting honest answers, and actually understanding their options. At the end of the day, it’s not about the documents or papers you’re signing. It’s about peace of mind, and that’s what I want your readers to know about us.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Over the next 5-10 years, I see two major forces shaping real estate and estate planning: technology and rising costs.

In estate planning, the growth of DIY platforms and AI-driven tools will make it easier than ever for people to generate documents. But what won’t change is the fact that estate planning is deeply personal. Technology can draft documents, but can’t navigate family dynamics, chosen family, blended households, or the long-term consequences of poor planning. I expect more people will try DIY planning first and unfortunately many of the issues in those plans won’t be known until it’s too late.

As real estate prices continuing to rise, more families and unmarried couples will pool resources, buying together, and finding themselves in situations they never expected to be in. This trend will increase the need for clear co-ownership agreements, especially as disputes about contribution and responsibilities become more common. We’ll also see people holding on to property longer, which makes estate planning even more critical to avoid expensive probate and capital gains issues.

Both industries are moving toward greater reliance on tech and cost-conscious decision making, but the need for trusted, human guidance is only going to grow.
