Today we’d like to introduce you to Jane Vu Svec.
Hi Jane Vu, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey in dentistry started before I could even talk. As a baby, I had early childhood caries from drinking out of a bottle for too long (yes, with juice in it—big mistake). By age three, I was under general anesthesia getting my teeth treated, which left me with a smile full of stainless steel crowns. I totally rocked that grill until those teeth fell out, though.
My mom never missed a six-month check-up, but somehow I still managed to get cavities every single time. Despite that, I loved going to the dentist. My dentist and his team cared for me. It shaped how I see dentistry today— it’s not just about fixing teeth but building connection, trust, and support.
By my teens, I was already passionate about healthcare and prevention. At 14 I decided I wanted to be a dentist, and I’ve never looked back. Honestly, I think I love dentistry more than anyone I know.
I started my career in community health, treating the homeless at Father Joe’s Village and caring for many children and migrant workers at Vista Community Clinic. Serving the underserved and giving back to the community has always been important to me. After a few years, I transitioned into private practice, working for nine years as an associate dentist in La Mesa.
In July of 2023 I opened The Dental House. I had fallen in love with the people of La Mesa and wanted to create something different—a dental experience centered on what truly matters to me.
I believe in inspiring people to live consciously and in wellness. I love empowering my patients to focus on the positive and make meaningful changes—not just for their dental and overall health, but for the health of our community and our planet.
Outside the office, I’m married to an amazing husband who works in environmental science for the water industry, and together we’re raising two adventurous kids, ages 7 and 4. Life is full, vibrant, and purpose-driven—just the way I like it.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Becoming a dentist is no small feat—it took me eight years to earn my DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery). Luckily, I grew up with an incredible example in my dad. He came to America as a refugee from Vietnam with nothing but the clothes on his back, and went on to become a respected civil engineer in my home state of Iowa. From him, I learned that no matter the obstacle, perseverance wins.
Starting a dental practice was actually easier than I expected…running one, on the other hand, is a whole different story. Banks were more than happy to loan me as much as I wanted, but no one handed me a manual for how to run a small business. My dental education didn’t cover how to pay employees, navigate commercial leases, handle business taxes (plus the surprise fees and licenses that pop up along the way), bill insurance companies, decode what dental “insurance” really means, or make sense of lawyer-speak in legal documents.
I’ve learned all of it through trial, error, and a lot of late nights—thankfully with an amazing team and an incredibly supportive husband by my side. Every challenge that comes my way, I face with the same mindset: I can figure this out. If other dentists can do it, so can I. I roll up my sleeves, do the work, and learn everything I can so I never have to learn the same hard lesson twice.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
The Dental House is a small, boutique-style dental office owned and operated by Jane Vu Svec, DDS (a.k.a. Dr. Vu). Our philosophy is simple: quality always comes before profit. Every patient receives exceptional care—no shortcuts, no exceptions.
What makes us different? We’re a certified California Green Business, prioritizing not only our patients’ health but also the health of our community and planet. We partner with eco-conscious brands and use sustainable products like bamboo toothbrushes, biodegradable floss picks, and items made from recycled materials. Dr. Vu also loves to educate and inspire patients to choose wellness—for themselves and the planet.
Dr. Vu’s expertise includes aesthetics such as Invisalign, composite bonding, veneers, Botox, and teeth whitening. Beyond that, she provides comprehensive dental care and performs many specialty services often referred out by other offices—extractions, bone grafting, implant surgery, root canals, pediatric and geriatric dentistry.
Our approach is never one-size-fits-all. We take the time to understand each patient’s needs and deliver long-lasting solutions. To make care accessible, we offer an in-house membership for patients without dental coverage. Memberships include 2 free exams, 2 free regular cleanings, unlimited x-rays, 1 free fluoride treatment, 20% off recommended treatment, and 10% off elective treatment—starting at just $40/month.
At The Dental House, you’ll receive compassionate care without judgment or lectures—just a warm welcome, honest guidance, and the highest standard of dentistry.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
One of my favorite childhood memories is visiting Gooseberry Falls in northern Minnesota and Sioux Falls in South Dakota. I grew up in Iowa, and my grandparents lived in those neighboring states, so our family vacations often meant long drives to see them. Every so often, we’d stop to explore the state parks and natural attractions nearby. At Gooseberry Falls, I waded in the flowing rivers, climbed over rocks, and felt the cool spray from the falls. I’ve always loved nature—not just admiring it from a distance, but getting right in it, playing, and exploring firsthand.
