Today we’d like to introduce you to Alisha Lynn.
Hi Alisha, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello everyone! I am truly honored to share with you my story on how I quit my full time job and followed my heart to start my own business. Today, I hope to inspire those who are hesitate on following their dreams.
There I was again, on my way to work trying to clear all my negative thoughts, by listening to another inspirational TED talk. These TED talks were my outlet, my way to escape the reality that I was truly miserable at my job. By this time, I was 8 years into my career as a registered nurse. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely loved caring for my patients and everyone I worked with was like family to me. What I didn’t like, was everything else that came along with being a nurse. The endless documentation, continuously being understaffed, overworked, under-appreciated, stressed out, and having to get approval to go to lunch or on vacation. I was ready for a new career, something that truly brought me joy; one that I was passionate about.
It wouldn’t be until years later, I grew the courage to leave my nursing profession and start a career of my own. My TED talks continued, inspiration became stronger, yet I always found an excuse not to move on. I thought, I get paid well, I have benefits, I have a retirement plan; that’s all I need to survive, right? Scared to leave a stable job, I began looking into Nurse Practitioner school. At least as a Nurse Practitioner I could diagnose and treat patients, maybe even have more freedom and autonomy. So I followed that path and started my masters program. My first semester went well, but I still felt like something was missing, like I wasn’t being true to myself.
Yoga! Yes, that was my answer to it all. I’ll just become a yoga teacher and once I get a huge clientele I can leave my nursing profession. Boy was I wrong. I went through a 200 hour yoga teacher training, while working my full time nursing job. Once it came time to take all the tests to become a yoga instructor, I failed the very last one, the one where I was actually teaching the class. It was devastating at the time, but later I came to realize it was truly a blessing in disguise. During yoga teacher training, I was able to become more in tune with my inner-self. I discovered that not only was I wanting to find my passion, but I was ready to move to the city I always dreamed of, the one I wanted to be my final destination. I put in my three weeks notice, packed my things, and moved to the beautiful city of San Diego, California.
I felt on top of the world. Until my bank account started to dwindle away and I needed to find work, fast. So I did what I knew best, I applied for a nursing job. One thing was for sure, I never wanted to work in a hospital ever again, but a clinic position, I was ready to try. Much to my surprise, there was a job available for a very busy orthopedic surgeon and I got the job. I was relieved; thinking, maybe this will be different, maybe I will like being a nurse again. Before I knew it, two years flew by. I once again, found myself working tirelessly, literally burning myself out trying to keep up with the workload; I’d skip breaks, lunch, and worked overtime even after clocking out for the day. I was exhausted, depressed, and ready for a change. Finally, I listened to what my soul has been telling me all along, to follow my dreams, so I did what was so overdue and resigned from my nursing position. Freedom at last!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been the easiest of transitions, but one thing is for sure, leaving my career as a nurse to start my own business, has been the best decision I have ever made! The struggles were real, but nothing that I couldn’t overcome.
I was not only letting go of my career as a nurse, but a part of my identity. I was now on a whole new journey of self exploration, learning curves, and picking myself up every time I’d fall. As you could imagine, my family members did not understand why I would leave a stable career to venture out on my own. In their eyes, all those years of nursing school and college loans were a waste of time. But I saw things differently. I saw an ambitious woman, following her passion, being true to herself, and excited to follow her heart. I have always been incredible at organizing and decorating. Since childhood it has been something that has come naturally to me and something I have always enjoyed.
Initially, it was challenging transforming into a business owner. I realized quickly that I could be amazing at organizing and interior design, but if I didn’t have business, networking, and marketing skills, my business was going to be history. So I learned everything I could, built my own website, designed my own business cards, created my own social media pages, and took every step I could take in order to lead me in the right direction. Money was very tight, I worked long hours, and sometimes questioned if I had what it took. But through all the tears, sleepless nights, and hours put in, I’ve created the life I have always dreamed. As the saying goes, you’ll never work a day in your life it you love what you do.
