Inspiring Conversations with Chrisman Hughes of Bullworker

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chrisman Hughes.

Chrisman, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Born and raised in Peoria Arizona, I was fortunate enough to have an incredible childhood. From two amazing parents and brother to friends that embodied what friendships are about, teachers that challenged me, and coaches that pushed me.

I was always active; whether it being involved with organized sports or exploring the outdoors. With my active mindset, fitness became an interest at an early age. In high school, my strength training through the football program gave me a solid foundation to build on in college. At The University of Arizona, we had one of the nicest fitness centers in the country. It was easy for me to pick up where I left off and create my own exercise routines.

Though I studied business, I made a commitment to teach for two years through a Teach for America program. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and learned so much about learning styles, building relationships, and the art of teaching. As the saying goes: “To really understand something, teach it.”

Teaching is a demanding profession and spending the money and time for the gym was the last thing I wanted to put my resources to. I asked my dad, who owned a fitness company called Bullworker, for all of the products. The products were compact, effective, and most importantly of all convenient. I was amazed at how much time I was saving, yet achieving substantial fitness levels. I was more defined, moved, and felt better, and improved my flexibility.

After teaching, I took off for South America to continue my learning experience. I brought along the ISO-BOW, a 3-ounce device that fits in your pocket. 8 months later I approached my dad and asked “What are you doing with this, I want in.”

From that moment on, I was focused on rebranding Bullworker, building a new website, and improving the products and experience. I would find time before and after my day job of working as a Data Analyst and Recruiter at Denver Public Schools to work on building the Bullworker business. I knew where my passion lived.

Now as the President of Bullworker and being headquartered in San Diego I still get to put our products to the test with an active lifestyle enjoying things like surfing, climbing, backpacking, and a variety of pickup games. San Diego offers a plethora of communities passionate about being active and I look forward to continuing to meet people in the fitness space.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My perspective on life is that comparison is the thief of joy, so to some, my road may be smoother and to others it may be rough, but my intention is to embrace what comes my way and make the most of it. I try to ask myself if I can control the situation, if so, get busy, if not, stop worrying about it.

Of course, we all have bumps in the road. My experience teaching was definitely a challenge. Never having studied or thought about becoming a teacher, designing the curriculum to teach Earth and Environmental Science to high school freshmen was certainly a learning curve. Those who have taught know what I am talking about, the endless nights of lesson planning, grading, frustrations of behavior management, desire to see your students succeed, and non-stop teacher talk (even if you and your teacher friends agreed not to talk teaching). I learned so much those two years and the lessons and energy my students gifted me will always be something I cherish.

Then came building a business which is certainly not an easy task and it is not for everyone. There are many facets to a company and trying to wear every hat may be necessary in the beginning, but not sustainable. Delivering high-quality products, keeping customers happy, complying with tax and legalities around the world, hiring and managing people, fielding supply chain disturbances, continuing to improve, and the list goes on. I am finding out the more we grow, the more bumps that come up in the road.

Thinking about that though, if you just stay on the smooth pathed road of Main St, you will always be on Main St. I find life is more fun off of Main St, on the rugged roads and trails of exploration.

We’ve been impressed with Bullworker, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

Thorough studies at the Max Planck Institute proved 7-second isometric strength training is the fastest technique to obtain maximum muscle growth.

Later, a study at the University of Connecticut put isometrics to the test. The study resulted in the isometric training group improving three times faster than the sports training group on tests measuring strength, endurance, coordination, and agility.

In 1962, based on these findings, the Bullworker was invented giving the world the most effective and convenient fitness tool.
