Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Murphy
Hi Courtney, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I grew up in a tiny town in South Dakota. My father and both Grandfathers were in the construction industry. I grew up helping my Dad with DIY projects and tagging along with him to side jobs. I loved everything about it!
In 2004 my husband and I purchased our first fixer home in North Park. It was the cutest little Spanish bungalow that was in dire need of some love. With the help of my Dad, we jumped right into the murky waters of DIY home renovations. We learned so much! Our daughter, Kennedy, was born and we decided to leave North Park and purchase a larger home in Bay Park, that also turned into a project.
In 2014 my husband died suddenly, and I decided that we needed to sell our large home and go back to North Park, the neighborhood that has always been home to me. I found a craftsman that was in terrible condition, and I knew that rebuilding this home for my daughter and I was going to be exactly what I needed to begin to heal. Everyone thought I was nuts…and truthfully, I probably was. The renovation was massive and my Dad and I did as much as the work ourselves as we could. The contractors that worked on my house became like a second family, especially my incredibly grouchy plumber, Tony. One day Tony (who NEVER gave compliments) said, “you know…you are really good at this”. His words stuck with me and after my home was completed, I knew that working on home renovation projects was what I was always meant to do.
I saw a need in the market for a project manager to help people get their homes ready to sell and also help our new home owners coordinate renovations of newly purchased homes. My dear friend and trusted Realtor, Noel Wheeler, and I had lunch, and I mentioned my business idea. She loved it and after that a business was born.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest obstacle that I faced (and truthfully still do) is confidence. The more projects I completed that more I realized the value that I add, but I still have those moments where I need to remember the old SNL Stuart Smalley skits and remind myself that “I’m good enough, I’m smart enough and doggonit people like me”.
I think that anyone who is crazy enough to go out on their own and start a business has moments of self doubt. It takes an incredible amount of bravery, and I am so proud to show my daughter that despite having a really awful thing happen we can still pull ourselves up and do hard things.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Courtney Murphy Homes?

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I love what I do.
Typically when my clients are selling or have just purchased a home it is signalling a transition in their lives (a big move, a change in family dynamics or working with a estate after a home owner passes away). I’ve been through those tough transitions and know how stressful and anxiety ridden they can be. I do my best to really take care of my clients.
I also have the upmost respect for the talend contractors that I work with.
