Life & Work with Skylar Lloyd of La Jolla Sd

Today we’d like to introduce you to Skylar Lloyd.

Hi Skylar, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I got into tattooing thanks to my mentor Kent and the tattoo community back home in Flint, Michigan. When I spent some time back there, they really encouraged me to take tattooing seriously. After returning to San Diego, I dyed my hair bright red and black and decided it was time to put myself out there — to start visiting shops and see if I could get hired or find an apprenticeship.

My friend Anna came with me, and the very first shop we stopped at changed everything. I showed the owner my Instagram, where I’d been posting the tattoos I was doing in Michigan, and he said, “Go grab your tattoo stuff and let me see you tattoo your friend.” So, we left, got my equipment, and came right back. After I finished Anna’s tattoo, he looked at me and said, “Alright — when do you want to start?” That moment marked the beginning of my life-changing career.

Not long after, I met my dear friend and mentor, Haley, the owner of Haley Carmody Artistry in La Jolla. That’s where I work in San Diego. I began renting space and apprenticing under her for PMU (permanent makeup), and it’s been such an incredible journey of growth, creativity, and community ever since.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Honestly, I feel really fortunate for how I’ve gotten to where I am today. Of course, every path has its challenges, but I’ve always looked at mine as opportunities to grow rather than obstacles. This career has pushed me to evolve in so many ways personally and artistically that even the tough moments have felt like part of the process. Every experience has shaped me into the artist I am now.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a fine line tattoo artist and body piercer who takes pride in creating clean, detailed, and timeless tattoos. My goal is to give each client a relaxed, luxury experience because that’s exactly what getting a tattoo or piercing should be. It’s not just about the art itself, but about how you feel during the process. I love offering an environment where clients can feel comfortable, cared for, and confident while leaving with something beautiful and meaningful.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
I’m so grateful for how far this career has brought me and for every client who’s trusted me with their art. My focus will always be on providing an experience that feels personal, clean, and refined whether it’s a tattoo or a piercing. I’m excited to continue growing, perfecting my craft, and building meaningful connections through my work.
