Today we’d like to introduce you to Bailey Baxter.
Hi Bailey, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up on the east coast in Richmond, Virginia, attended Virginia Tech and received my Bachelors in Biology and Biomedical Sciences. Post-college I was living in Colorado, working in an Animal Hospital, constantly questioning whether or not I truly wanted to pursue a career as a Veterinarian. During the height of the COVID pandemic I found myself without a job, and wondering where my life was headed – unbeknownst to me, I was about to receive a call that would alter the course of my future. A friend in California, knowing my love of Interior Design, pitched the idea that I make my way out to San Diego and take on the job of designing his newly purchased rental property. With nothing to lose, I made the leap to follow my true passion of Interior Design. I fell in love with the design process during that first project, and began networking with local realtors and tradesmen. This led to several new opportunities which continued to snowball into more and more projects. For four years I was focused on designing Airbnb’s, doing everything from full-home furnishing to kitchen and bathroom remodels. Throughout that time I took courses to further my design education, technical knowledge and devoured podcasts and books on business and design.
In the spring of 2023, my boyfriend and I made the decision to take 6 months off from our regular life and roadtrip from San Diego down to Panama. Upon returning home, I was feeling so inspired from my travels and dove right back into Interior Design. My turning point came while working on my favorite project yet—a full remodel of a primary suite where I was given complete creative control. It was during this project that I realized I wanted to focus all of my attention on full-scale residential design and leave the world of short term rentals in the past, never looking back. Over the last year I have expanded my portfolio drastically and continue to grow both as a designer and a small business owner. I’m currently in the midst of several projects I’m thrilled about, set to wrap up in 2025, and can’t wait to see how my business continues to grow!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It most definitely has not always been a smooth road. Starting out with little technical experience and a background geared towards Veterinary Medicine, I was in over my head with that first project! However, I’m a big believer that the best way improve is through repetition and practice; and what better way to learn than trial by fire?
I learned so much during those first couple of years and continue to from each project I take on; always remaining curious and eager to learn something new. I’ve loved Interior Design since I was a little girl, binging HGTV, and was often told by friends and family that I had an innate gift and should pursue it. Making a drastic career shift is always scary, especially going the route of an entrepreneur, but I’m so grateful I made the decision to trust my gut and pursue my dream.
Today, after years of learning, refining my skills, and trusting my instincts, my business has grown into a thriving design studio that creates spaces that are both timeless and uniquely tailored to my clients.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
My mantra at Bailey Baxter Interiors is, ‘Intentional Design, Inspired Living.’ I believe our homes are more than just places where we live—they’re deeply connected to our well-being. I love learning about how our spaces impact how we feel and function, and I strive to design environments that are thoughtful, purposeful, and tailored to each client’s unique lifestyle. Your home should be a true reflection of you, a place that makes you feel safe, and inspired.
I specialize in blending timeless design with elements of character and charm. I love incorporating vintage and thrifted finds into my projects, choosing each piece with intention so it feels like it truly belongs in your home. These one-of-a-kind items bring history to a space, creating designs that feel curated rather than trendy.
My offerings range from full-scale remodels and new custom home designs to interior styling and virtual design consultations (when my schedule allows).
What sets my brand apart is my dedication to the details that make a home feel personal and lived-in. I approach every project with creativity, and a commitment to helping my clients bring their vision to life; at the end of the day it’s their home not mine! I’m most proud of how my business has grown into a trusted resource for those seeking design solutions that feel thoughtful and authentic.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
Oh yes! I’m a huge reader and can always be found with a book (or my kindle) nearby! For all things Interior Design I regularly listen to LuAnn Nigara’s podcast ‘A Well-Designed Business’, and Darla Powell’s ‘Designed by Wingnut Social’. On the personal side, ‘The Mindset Mentor’ podcast is a huge inspiration to me; I listen to an episode every morning to ensure that I start my day off on the right foot. I’m a big believer that your mindset is everything!!
Some of my most recommended books are ‘When Business is Love” by Jan Ryde, ‘Level Up’ By Rob Dial and ‘New York School of Interior Design: Home: The Foundations of Enduring Spaces’ by Ellen Fisher.
