Meet Brooke Shoemaker of Wildflower Studios

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brooke Shoemaker.

Brooke, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Wildflower came to life in 2017 as a floral design studio out of my home in North Park.

I got my start in flowers several years prior when I moved to San Diego from Los Angeles. I was feeling pretty uninspired from work I was doing up there so when I moved, I found a job in a flower shop and fell in love with being a florist. I grew up in Hawaii with a Dad who ran a Kava (now Olive) Farm, so working with plants and getting my hands dirty feels very natural to me.

We’ve been steadily growing, and now, after a year in business, we’ve outgrown our home studio and are preparing to move into a beautiful space shared with Barre + Baywreath and MeKa Coffee.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
For the most part, yes. There are definitely challenges and a flow of ups & downs that come with starting a business. I still struggle with setting boundaries on my time and all the costs associated. I truly love being helpful and creating for other people, but it’s important to find the balance and make a living doing so!

Please tell us about Wildflower Studios.
Wildflower is a boutique design studio. While our primary focus is on flowers for weddings & events, but our small shop will have a rotating bouquet bar, seasonal arrangements, ongoing workshops, and specially curated gifts.

I’m a big fan of simplicity in designs and prefer to allow the blooms to really shine and speak for themselves. At our shop, we take thoughtful care about what is in stock each week. I want for it to be ever changing – with the seasons or what looks particularly good at the markets. I’d love for it to be a place where you’re not sure what you’ll find when you come in.

We also have a unique offering: full-service travel planning. I come from a background in travel, so we’ve been able to offer destination planning as well as honeymoons, mini moons, babymoons – you name it!

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Nothing! When I first started Wildflower, I thought I would offer more day to day arrangements. But, I really love working with brides. Creating mood boards, getting a sense of their vision and helping to bring to life such a special day is incredible! For me, it’s all about trusting the process and continually adapting to changes.
