Today we’d like to introduce you to Claudia K. Romero M-Cox
Hi Claudia K., we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I am a self-taught artist based in San Diego, CA. From a young age, painting has been my way to express myself and find solace during stressful times. My work is deeply inspired by the ocean, with a special focus on depicting the mesmerizing beauty of sea creatures, particularly octopi. In addition to marine life, I often create abstract pieces that convey the spectrum of my emotions and experiences.
Currently, I am a full-time stay-at-home mom, which is a role I cherish deeply. Despite my busy schedule, I dedicate part of my time to painting whenever possible. This balance allows me to continue nurturing my passion for art while being present for my family. My journey as an artist is a reflection of my love for creativity and my desire to continually evolve and express my inner world through my artwork.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My art journey has been incredibly rewarding, but it hasn’t always been a smooth road. Balancing my passion for painting with the demands of daily life, especially as a full-time stay-at-home mom, has presented its challenges. My child was born during the Covid-19 pandemic and spent considerable time in the NICU. I have been busy managing ongoing medical care ever since. Managing my child’s needs has required immense dedication and energy, often leaving little time for my art. I am inspired every single day by his strength and it motivates me to keep the art dream alive.
As a self-taught artist I’ve had to navigate the art world without formal training, relying on my determination and passion for creativity. The pockets of self-doubt turn into resilience and perseverance. My love for painting will always drive me forward. Each obstacle has ultimately strengthened my commitment to my craft, and every struggle has been a valuable part of my journey. The support of my family and the joy of creating something meaningful make every hurdle worth overcoming.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I paint primarily with acrylic on canvas, though I occasionally explore other styles such as traditional flash and watercolor. My work often focuses on capturing the beautiful balance between life and death, featuring a lot of skeletons and flowers to symbolize this duality This theme is a significant part of my identity.
One of the standout elements in my work is a series featuring a red umbrella, which symbolizes strength and perseverance. The crimson umbrella in my paintings represents the weight of responsibilities, while the subtle interplay of light and shadow symbolizes the resilience that keeps me going. This series embodies my search for hope and the ability to endure challenges.
What sets me apart as an artist is my ability to blend these profound themes with a distinctive visual style, creating pieces that are not only visually striking but also deeply meaningful. My use of symbolism and the emotional depth of my work resonate with viewers, offering a reflective and thought-provoking experience. .
What does success mean to you?
Success is a journey of personal growth and the ability to connect with others through my work. It’s about sharing my vulnerability with the world and finding resonance in the hearts of others. As long as my art can inspire, comfort and create a sense of shared understanding among people, I am happy. The unwavering support of my community means the world to me. Ultimately, it’s about finding the balance between my personal life and my passion for art, and knowing that my work can encourage others to embrace their own vulnerabilities.
